Lecture Series at Williams Wharf Landing

June 19, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

  • « Isaac Hadden Organ Trio
  • Public Opening of the Thomas Hunley General Store & Post Office »

Join the Mathews Land Conservancy for a discussion on the rise in modern aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay and why we should make room for it, with Mike Congrove and Stan Allen from Oyster Seed Holdings. Oyster aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay bloomed relatively late on the world stage, but rose very quickly in the 2000s so that Virginia now leads the East Coast in production. This growth was bolstered by the development of breeding techniques that maximize productivity. With this growth was a concomitant rise in hatchery production, and Oyster Seed Holdings was one of the founding oyster hatcheries in the Bay. The restorative nature of oyster culture is a vital force in sustainable food supply writ large in the world.
