The Mathews County Historical Society will host world-renowned underwater archaeologist John Broadwater, author of USS Monitor: A Historic Ship Completes Its Final Voyage, for a talk about the Monitor’s sinking, discovery, and eventual designation as our nation’s first national marine sanctuary.
Broadwater oversaw salvage work on the Monitor, leading seven dives to recover the ship’s turret and other pieces of the famed Civil War-era ironclad ship, which are now housed at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News.
