New Tracking Map for Mathews
The goal of this map is so that citizens, Adopt-a-highway participants (AAH) and cleanup coordinators can track on-going cleanups in Mathews, and target areas that have not been focused on. Submit your cleanups here.
Annual Cleanups
The Mathews Visitor Center (MCVIC) hosts several Community Cleanups annually inviting residents to pick up trash along the beautiful roadways of Mathews.
2021 Cleanups:
Spring: Saturday, April 10th, 8am (Raindate: April 24th)
Fall: Saturday, November 13th, 8am (Raindate: November 20th)
Please know that MCVIC will not be providing breakfast or lunch as normal due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will provide water bottles and granola bars.
How to Participate:
You can sign up for the cleanup by emailing mathewsvisitorcenter@gmail.com
Plan ahead and gather family or a neighbor to help with your efforts. Call 804-725-4229 or email mathewsvisitorcenter@gmail.com with any questions. All groups are expected to where masks and social distance when in 6 foot proximity to each other.
For Adopt-a-Highway or Small Community Groups, we ask that ONE or TWO group leaders from your cleanup group be responsible for picking up and dropping off cleanup supplies to MCVIC, and distributing them carefully among your participating members. Groups should separate themselves along cleanup routes and avoid gathering.
Let us know how many family members will be participating in your cleanup.
Decide on a route of your choosing, or MCVIC will provide you with a list of high-priority areas in Mathews the morning of the event.
Pick up your supplies between 8am to 9am at Sibley’s General Store. We provide trash bags, vests and 1-2 nets per group.

Guidelines for cleanup:
-Wear long sleeve pants, sneakers, and we recommend bug spray and sun screen.
-Bring your own gloves (we recommend thick and durable like gardening gloves) and please wear your face mask.
-All groups must have someone over the age of 18 attending cleanups.
-Please be careful of windy backroads, and keep children off major highways. Also, be careful of sharp litter/debris, and deep ditches.
-Avoid touching your face at all costs. Women are encouraged to wear their hair up to help with this!
– The Mathews Visitor Center will not held liable for any injury.
After Your Cleanup
Bring your full trash bags to the Mathews Waster Transfer Station on Route 14.
If you cannot physically take your bags, please notify MCVIC staff where you left your bags when returning your supplies. You must leave bags clearly off the side of the road, and know exactly how many were left in your location.
Return your vests and nets to the porch of Sibley’s General Store porch at 239 Main Street.
Thank you for participating!
