The Mathews Visitor Center (MCVIC) bi-annually hosts Community Cleanups where residents gather to pick up trash along the roadways of Mathews. Our Spring cleanup was canceled to prevent a group gathering during the coronavirus, but we would like to provide trash cleanup supplies to the community as their has been an influx of stay-at-home activities, and residents picking up trash around the county. During the month of May, (or until supplies last) MCVIC will be providing “family cleanup kits” for your own DIY cleanups!
How to Participate in the Family Roadside Cleanup Initiative in Mathews during May
Plan ahead, and start by calling 804-725-8913 or 804-384-8624 or emailing email@example.com. Please give us 1-2 days notice to get your Family Cleanup Kit ready for pickup.
Let us know how many family members will be participating in your cleanup.
Decide on a route of your choosing, or pick from this google doc. list with high-priority areas in Mathews.
Pick up your kit on a date scheduled with us. We will leave the kit for you on the front porch of the Sibley’s General Store at 239 Main Street. Kit’s include trash bags, vests and 1-2 nets per group. (The vests and nets in these kits must be returned to MCVIC to be sanitized and reused for future cleanups, LIMITED SUPPLIES AVAILABLE)
Guidelines for cleanup:
-Wear long sleeve shirts & pants
-Bring your own gloves (we recommend thick and durable like gardening gloves) and please wear your face mask.
-Families must have someone over the age of 18 attending cleanups.
-Please be careful of windy backroads, and keep children off major highways. Also, be careful of sharp litter/debris, and deep ditches.
-Avoid touching your face at all costs. Women are encouraged to wear their hair up to help with this!
– The Mathews Visitor Center will not held liable for any injury.
After Your Cleanup
Bring your full trash bags to the Mathews Waster Transfer Station on Route 14.
If you cannot physically take your bags, please call 804-725-8913 or 804-384-8624 and let us know where, and how many bags were left clear off the side of the road and we will make arrangements to pick them up.
Return your vests and nets to the back porch of Sibley’s General Store (down Maple Avenue near the Library courtyard) in the provided containers.
