The Mathews County Visitor & Information Center (MCVIC) continues its commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our community through proactive litter prevention efforts, thanks to generous annual grants from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). For years, these funds have supported initiatives that encourage local participation in roadside cleanup activities, held twice annually.
In 2025, MCVIC is taking its efforts to the next level, building on previous successes to create a cleaner, more welcoming environment for both residents and visitors alike! One of the major enhancements that MCVIC started in 2024 was the addition of two dumpsters in high-traffic areas—Bethel Beach and Dutton Park-N-Ride. These dumpsters will not only provide a more convenient way for people to dispose of waste, but will also help to prevent litter from accumulating in these popular locations.
In addition to these new waste disposal solutions, MCVIC has partnered with the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center to arrange twice-monthly inmate litter pickup days. This collaboration will ensure regular and efficient cleanups around Mathews County, keeping the area looking pristine for everyone who enjoys its beauty.
In line with its growing litter prevention campaign, MCVIC has adopted the slogan “Keep It Clean Y’all.” This catchy phrase appears on the newly placed dumpsters and will be featured prominently in the upcoming 2025 Earth Day school program. The program, which will take place in April 2025, will distribute litter prevention materials and giveaways to all Mathews County public school students. It’s a great opportunity to educate the next generation about the importance of keeping our community clean and beautiful!
At the heart of MCVIC’s mission is the promotion of Mathews County as a top-tier destination for tourism. By maintaining a clean environment, MCVIC helps showcase the area’s natural charm, offering a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and fostering pride among residents. This forward-thinking approach not only benefits Mathews County today, but ensures its sustainability for future generations.
Stay tuned for updates on the Earth Day program in April 2025, and remember to do your part—whether it’s picking up litter, spreading the word, or simply helping to maintain the beauty of our beloved community. Keep an eye out for registration info for the two upcoming Community Litter Cleanups on April 12 and November 8.
Together, we can keep Mathews County clean for all to enjoy!
