About MOC
The Mathews Outdoor Club, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was started by a few local outdoor enthusiasts. MOC was established to encourage and facilitate the use of Mathews outdoor spaces to the fullest, inviting locals to fun activities, and connecting visitors to the unique topography of Virginia’s tidewater region via car, bike and kayak!
Christine Johnson, President of the MOC, has been doing outdoor events for years. A few event favorites include the Micro-Triathlon Series, Put-in Creek Duathlon, and Gwynn’s Island Festival Race. While these events continued to grow in Mathews, so did her vision.
“I’ve really enjoyed the camaraderie with participants and watching these events grow over the years. Then the Coronavirus shook the world and left all of us wondering what we can & should do to keep healthy & stay active — and safe. For myself – and many loyal participants in my events – our answer was to get outdoors. We adjusted the events to reduce participant & volunteer contact — and held them all live in 2020. Seeing the enthusiasm and knowing the appetite for outdoor fitness activities, I knew it was time to expand our offerings beyond competitive events.
I found great partners in Bronwyn Hughes & Kat Sharp and we were able to quickly reorganize and get the MOC up and running. We’ve got a loyal group here locally and are excited to share the Mathews outdoor spaces with our visitors.”
