Downtown Mathews, sometimes referred to as the Village but more often called the Court House by locals, is in the middle of a long-awaited face lift. Although our downtown is quaint enough without any additional assistance, even those of us who love her the most couldn’t help but notice signs of advanced age, including uneven sidewalks and drainage issues.
After more than 20 years of diligent fundraising and tireless efforts, the Mathews Main Street Committee is finally seeing the fruits of its labor. Work on the project, which includes new sidewalks, gutters, curbs and landscaping, is currently underway.
Although pedestrians and drivers may be mildly inconvenienced at having to wait or being rerouted temporarily, all businesses are open as usual.
So pardon our mess, but please don’t let it deter you from visiting our businesses. The end result of this major improvement will be well worth the wait.
