Profiles of Honor Tour – WW I & II Mobile Museum
Mathews Memorial Library is pleased to join other communities in Virginia in hosting the Virginia World War I and World War II Commission’s Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour. Visitors are encouraged to bring their WWI and II related photographs or letters to be scanned for inclusion in the mobile exhibit, helping to further preserve the legacy of our Veterans.

Deck the Halls – Recapture the Magic
Begin your holiday season in a magical fairyland setting which you help create at Mathews Memorial Library. Gingerbread houses are a Christmas tradition that will be observed at the library. Young people ages 6-13 are invited to celebrate the magic of the season in a creative adventure to design and build a gingerbread house. To make the job easier, we will supply the necessary building materials. A prize will be given for the finest and most creative “cookie cottage.” Festive ginger cookies and hot chocolate will be served.

Music is the strongest form of magic. Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and its Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is truly such magic. Be transformed this season through the magical sounds of Tchaikovsky and the Ambrosia Quartet in their presentation of this and other familiar holiday compositions. Their very special presentation is guaranteed to follow you throughout the season as you recall their performance.

Santa has promised to appear at a storytime filled with the magic of Christmas just for the very young (birth-5 years old). Pull on your pj’s, grab your blanket and your favorite teddy bear and come to the library to visit with Santa and share in the magic of Christmas stories. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served.

Memory Support Group
Memory Support Group sponsored by Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury The 2nd Thursday of every month at 1:00 pm, Mathews Memorial Library The Memory Support Group is for persons living with dementia in early through late stages and offers support for the caregivers. Activities will be offered for the individual with memory loss and support for the caregiver. The group is led by RWC’s Dementia Coordinator, Mary Arthur, who is PAC Certified.

Brad Parks recently published book, “Say Nothing,” received the People’s Choice Award for Fiction at the 21st Annual Library of Virginia Literacy Awards Celebration honoring Virginia writers. Parks, a former journalist for the Washington Post and former resident of Middlesex, has appeared at the library on several occasions to discuss his mysteries, one of which featured Mathews as the setting for the novel.

Earl Swift – Visiting Author
Earl Swift, author of “Chesapeake Requiem,” will speak about his book which takes an intimate look at Tangier Island, it’s past, present and tenuous future.
