Archaeology in the Palm of Your Hand: Using Drones and 3D Printing to Bring Fairfield Plantation to Life

Ashley McCuiston, Fairfield Foundation’s Public Outreach Coordinator and Digital Curator

The Fairfield Foundation is using new technology to reimagine public archaeology and historic preservation on the Middle Peninsula. Using drone photography and 3D printing, the organization is developing an interactive 3D printed model of Gloucester’s Fairfield Plantation that can be taken apart like a puzzle, simulating the process of archaeology and bringing the thrill of discovery from the field to the classroom. Furthermore, they are exploring new ways to use this technology to preserve endangered historic resources and inspire new interest in local history.

Come join us to explore this exciting new way to discover our history!
