The Mathews Visitor Center (MCVIC) hosts several Community Cleanups annually inviting residents to pick up trash along the beautiful roadways of Mathews.
How to Participate:
Plan ahead and gather family or a neighbor to help with your efforts. Call 804-725-4229 or email [email protected] with any questions. Register for the event by clicking the button above.
Participants will receive two free meals during the date of the cleanup including breakfast to-go, and a pizza party lunch! Pick up your supplies between 8am to 9am at Sibley’s General Store. We provide trash bags, gloves, vests, nets and grabbers.
For Adopt-a-Highway or Small Community Groups, we ask that a group leader be responsible for picking up and dropping off cleanup supplies to MCVIC. Decide on a route of your choosing, or MCVIC will provide you with a list of high-priority areas in Mathews the morning of the event.
Guidelines for cleanup:
Wear long sleeve pants, sneakers, gloves and we recommend bug spray and sun screen. All groups must have someone over the age of 18 attending cleanups. Please be careful of windy backroads, and keep children off major highways. Also, be careful of sharp litter/debris, and deep ditches.
The Mathews Visitor Center will not held liable for any injury.
After Your Cleanup
Bring your full trash bags to the Mathews Waster Transfer Station on Route 14. If you cannot physically take your bags, please notify MCVIC staff where you left your bags when returning your supplies. You must leave bags clearly off the side of the road, and know exactly how many were left in your location. Return your vests and nets to the porch of Sibley’s General Store porch at 239 Main Street.
New Tracking Map for Residents
The goal of this map is so that citizens, Adopt-a-highway participants (AAH) and cleanup coordinators can track on-going cleanups in Mathews, and target areas that have not been focused on. Submit your cleanups here.
