Executive Director
POSITION SUMMARY
The Mathews County Visitor & Information Center (MCVIC) is looking for a motivated and experienced Executive Director to run the operations of the center, and grow tourism initiatives for the County of Mathews. MCVIC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to fostering a tourism campaign and economic opportunities that respect and preserve the unique culture, natural resources, commerce, and small-town charm of Mathews County. MCVIC is the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) designated through Virginia Tourism Corporation.
The Executive Director of MCVIC is a full-time salaried position. The candidate will lead the industry to develop and implement strategic planning goals related to marketing, product development, partnerships, and industry growth. The Director reports to a Board of Directors and oversees a Retail Manager and volunteers. The ideal candidate will have experience and/or knowledge in marketing, project management, fundraising, grant writing, administration, book keeping, event planning, and leadership.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Undergraduate degree from a liberal arts program including but not limited to Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, Tourism and Hospitality, or related field. Experience in developing and implementing marketing programs and strategies, graphic design, sales, identifying and developing collaborations and partnerships. Experience with a variety of communication tools including newsletters, website management, press releases, blogs, and social media. Experience in fundraising, grant solicitation, and donor relations Experience with administrative duties including data and record keeping.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In 2023* – run MCVIC’s temporary visitor center while our permanent location undergoes major restoration. This includes overseeing the transition from our capital campaign to include PR, donor communications, paying contractors, managing the physical move and resetting up normal operations once the project is completed.
- Implement projects, and oversee the center’s strategic plans designed to encourage and promote tourism.
- Maintain a plan for marketing and advertising the many opportunities, events, landmarks, businesses, natural resources, and attractions of Mathews.
- Manage donor relations and fundraising for the center. Identify opportunities to grow the center’s budget.
- Network with local and statewide groups and county government to further our mission.
- Promote tourism and serve as a leader in the local tourism industry.
- Facilitate relationships with state tourism agencies, welcome centers and visitor centers.
- Grant writing for multi-faceted projects pertaining to the center.
- Bookkeeping for the center including input of retail sales, bill pay, and recording income and expenses using QuickBooks.
- Oversee Retail Manager, volunteers, and general maintenance of the Center.
- Compile and help disseminate information for the community and its visitors including managing the community calendar.
- Order and maintain supplies for the Center.
- Administrative duties such as data and record keeping.
- Maintain and establish the annual budget.
- Event planning that facilitates visitation and commerce.
- Attend meetings and seminars useful to the operation of the Center.
- Other duties as assigned.
Salary and Hours: The Executive Director of Mathews County Visitor and Information Center is a contract position at an annual salary of $35,000 to $40,000 for a 40-hour workweek. Benefits, other than paid vacation days, are not included. The Center is open from 10 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Saturday and from 12PM to 3PM on Sunday. Hours may be adjusted seasonally at the discretion of the Board. The Director is expected to work occasional Saturdays for events or special coverage but typically works Monday through Friday.
