SUMMARY:Jeff Little Trio
DESCRIPTION:With few exceptions\, the piano does not play a prominent part in Appalachian or Americana music\, and is rarely the lead instrument. But Jeff Little is an exception – and a remarkable one. His distinctive two-handed style\, much influenced by the   mountain flat-picked guitar tradition\, is breathtaking in its speed\, precision and clarity. \nLittle’s involvement with fiddle tunes\, old time country\, and traditional blues dates to his growing up in Boone\, North Carolina\, where his family\, owned a music shop. The shop was a regular gathering place for musicians who would just stop by to pick a few tunes. At an early age Jeff would regularly sit in with many of the musicians from the region\, including one of America’s most influential musicians\, Doc Watson. These influences helped shape Jeff’s approach to the piano which is based on these deep musical traditions. \nToday\, Jeff stays busy traveling the country performing concerts with an energy and dedication to his music that is evident at every show. Performances include The Smithsonian Institution\, The National Folk Festival\, American Piano Masters\, Merlefest\, and many festivals\, performing arts centers and music venues throughout the US. Jeff has been featured on National Public Radio and PBS many times and has also taken his music around the world for the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs performing in Sri Lanka\, Bahrain\, Oman\, France and Tanzania. In 2014 Jeff was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame. In addition Jeff is a full time faculty member and Artist in Residence for the Popular Music Program at Catawba College in Salisbury\, NC.

DESCRIPTION:Bay Quilters meets the Second Thursday of Every Month at Westville Christian Church \nBay Quilters Guild meets to learn new quilting skills\, share information\, display completed items or found treasures\, and make quilts for various charitable organizations. During the calendar year\, they hold classes\, lectures\, and a Mystery Quilt Retreat. The Guild sponsors an annual quilt show at the Mathews Public Library during Market Days (first weekend after Labor Day in September). Individual members take part in the May Faire Arts & Crafts Competition (first Saturday in May). Everyone who quilts or who just plain loves looking at quilts is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Earl Swift\, author of “Chesapeake Requiem\,” will speak about his book which takes an intimate look at Tangier Island\, it’s past\, present and tenuous future. A veteran journalist\, Swift made his home among the residents of Tangier for more than a year after thinking for some time that writing a book on the Island was something he “wanted to do.”  As a result\, he saw firsthand\, not only the encroaching waters that threaten the Island but also the degree to which the residents are bound together as a community.

SUMMARY:Tales as Old as Time Gala - Bayside Youth Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Bayside Youth Ballet will present their annual Spring Gala\, “Tales as Old as Time” on Sunday\, May 19 at 2:00PM at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.  The show will open with the very popular “Be Our Guest” from the Disney movie\, Beauty and the Beast.  The company will also be performing excerpts from the village scenes of the beloved classic Giselle\, a favorite of the ballet company\, as well as scenes from the fiery Spanish ballet\, Don Quixote.  Also included in the performance of jazz\, classical ballet\, modern and musical theater is a fun and quirky piece inspired by Bob Fosse’s musical “The Pajama Game” and excerpts from the timeless Jerome Robbins classic West Side Story\, as well as other exciting selections. \nWith 23 dancers ranging in age from 10 to 18\, new and exciting choreography\, and lavish costumes\, the program is sure to entertain audiences of all ages. \nTickets for the performance are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 10 and are available at Office Supply in Gloucester\, the Mathews Visitor Center and Diggs School of Dance in Gloucester or email baysideballet@gmail.com.  Tickets will also be available at the door. \nRAFFLE DURING GALA \nTickets are on sale now.    You can email us\,  visit Bayside Youth Ballet Facebook page to request tickets\, meet up with one of our BYB dancers\, or stop by Diggs School of Dance to purchase. Tickets are 1 for $5\, 3 for $10\, and 5 for $20.
