DESCRIPTION:Join the Mathews VA250 Committee for a lecture with author and military historian Patrick Hannum\, featuring information on The Virginia Campaign of 1775: Great Bridge and Removing Dumore! \nThe political-military operating environment in Virginia during 1775 evolved quickly and dramatically. Two days after the clash at Lexington and Concord\, Lord Dunmore\, Virginia’s last royal colonial governor\, seized the powder from the public magazine in Williamsburg. This set off a series of events that led to multiple military clashes on Virginia soil. During December\, Patriots bloodied Dunmore’s regulars and Loyalist militia at Great Bridge in modern Chesapeake\, Virginia. The year ended with the newly formed Patriot army in control of the critical port city of Norfolk under command of a Continental officer from North Carolina. Providing context for these events allows for an appreciation of the military operations that follow and Virginia’s role in leading the movement for independence.  \nThe event is free and open to the public\, with refreshments provided.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Family Art & Clay Festival coincides with Mathews May Faire Celebration.\n\nAlong the Bay School driveway\, you’ll find free art activities for kids and adults and artisan vendors showcasing their craft.\nIn and out of the pottery studio\, participate in or watch our annual Raku Firing or the new Clay Olympics.\n\nRaku Firing – Participants at the raku firing were able to choose a bisque-fired pot or small figurine to glaze and then watch it be fired to 1800°F in less than an hour! Potters who preferred to fire something of their own were able to bring their own pot or small sculptural piece to glaze and fire. Kids or adults who didn’t want to do raku\, had the option to paint a bisque-fired pot with acrylic paint and take it home with no need of a firing. Glaze and fire our pot for $30\, your own pot for $15\, or paint a pot for $10.\n\nClay Olympics – Launched in 2025 as a pottery throwdown\, this year we are adding hand-building challenges to the competition. Participants will compete in a series of challenges that test their skill and artistry\, hoping to advance to the next round and win it all. Enter the Olympics for $10 or cheer on your favorite competitor!
