DESCRIPTION:4m Run\, 10m Ride or Run/Ride Duathlon: Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County is the host site of this annual race. Join runners & riders in this unique tour of one of Virginia’s special locations – then hang around to enjoy the music & food. \n4 mile road run\nStarting and ending at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, the route follows quiet backroads around the island\, with a constant view of the water. The race course is 4 miles and the cost is $30. For those looking for a shorter distance\, we will have a Free Fun Run open for everyone (distance just > 1 mile). \n10 mile bicycle ride\nWeaving around the backroads of Gwynn’s Island\, you’ll catch glimpses of the Chesapeake Bay\, Milford Sound\, and the popular campground & RV resort on the island as you complete the course. The route is 10 miles and the cost is $30. \nCombine the run & ride\nFeeling adventurous? Sign up for the combined Run & Ride and make it a duathlon. The 4 mile run and 10 mile ride routes are the same as the individual events described above – you’ll stage your bicycle so that as you complete the run leg\, you can immediately head out onto the bike course. The cost is $50.

Count Basie nicknamed her “Stride” acknowledging the command with which she plays technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. Performing around the world with such stars as Melissa Etheridge\, Leslie Garrett\, Joel Grey\, Michael Feinstein\, Steve Ross\, and the Smothers Brothers\, her talent does not stop on the performance stage. She is also found on radio\, TV\, private recitals\, and on Jazz Inspired\, the popular NPR show and Podcast. She has chronicled her career in numerous articles on the subject of jazz as well as books\, one of which is her memoir\, Swinger! DESCRIPTION:Ware Neck\, a narrow body of land bordered on one side by the Ware River and the other by the North River\, is in Gloucester County. Visitors will enjoy this tour showcasing a close-knit community with a historic general store and post office\, whose early success was due to ties with steamships that once traded at nearby Hockley Wharf. Three private homes in this quaint community with unique and varied architecture and spectacular river views are included: Glen Roy\, an Antebellum mansion and one of the most elegant historic properties in Gloucester; The Lighthouse\, an eight-sided\, red roofed home in the style of a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse; and The Leigh House\, a more contemporary open and airy home with sweeping views of the Mobjack. Also included are the gardens at Belle Terre\, seven acres of a beautiful\, expansive property\, as well as two churches. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online at the website listed.

SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:Open April 1st – October 28th! \nThe cottage\, which is headquarters for the Mathews County Historical Society\, is named for Christopher Tompkins\, a local sea captain\, planter\, local merchant\, and member of the state legislature. He bought the cottage property in 1837 and is the first known owner. \nExhibits include a room dedicated to the history of Mathews County which serves as a gift shop\, two rooms representing a home from the 1840s to the 1900s\, and a room dedicated to Sally Louisa Tompkins who was the first woman commissioned in an American military unit. \nThe Tompkins Cottage is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.
