SUMMARY:The Battle of Cricket Hill - A Pivotal American Revolutionary Engagement Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding in the Mathews County area is titled “The Battle of Cricket Hill: A Pivotal American Revolutionary Engagement.” This exhibit will be launched by the Mathews Archives\, a collaboration between the Mathews County Historical Society and the Mathews Memorial Library. The exhibit will be open from July 1 to August 31.\nThe highlight of the display is an original clipping from the September 24\, 1776\, issue of the Leicester Journal\, a historic newspaper from Leicester\, England. The article details Lord Dunmore’s involvement in the Battle of Gwynn’s Island. The conflict centered around British forces occupying Gwynn’s Island under the command of Lord Dunmore\, Virginia’s last royal governor. Patriot forces launched attacks against the British position\, contributing to Dunmore’s eventual departure from Virginia and marking an important moment in the fight for independence in the Chesapeake region. \nJoin us as we commemorate 250 years of history\, courage\, and community on Gwynn’s Island.
