DESCRIPTION:Movie Night at the Museum\, Friday\, March 8\, will open with a brief historical slide presentation  of the nearly 40 years of County Fairs that were held in Mathews beginning in 1901\, and lasting  up to the early 1940s.  That  presentation will be followed by the movie\, “State Fair\,” an American musical film which tells the story of a brother and sister who go to a state fair in Dallas and find good clean fun and romance.  \nThe film sets the stage for this year’s Mathews heritage festival on May 4\, “A Rural Life\,” which focuses on family\, fishing and farming.  “It will definitely be reminiscent of a county fair this year\, “ says MHM President Tom Robinson.  “We are expanding our May Faire experience\, with significantly more children’s entertainment\, including painting horses\, hatching baby chicks\, the traditional May Pole dance\, a children’s “May Faire Zoo” and a very special guest\, Jonathan Austin and his “24 Hour Emergency Juggling and Magic Services!” \nThe musical\, “State Fair\,” is intended as an introduction to the upcoming May 4 May Faire event\, which will be similar in many ways to an old fashioned county fair. Doors open at the Museum\, 200 Main Street\, at  5:30 and the program begins at 6:00. No reservations are required and there is no charge for this event. They will read Peter Rabbit and another book about rabbits\, learn about rabbits\, and do two rabbit crafts. We will provide a snack or you can send one with your child. \nAt 4:30 the kids will come to the Bay School to paint Peter Rabbit on a canvas. \nAt 5:30 we will serve pizza with sides of rabbit-friendly veggies\, of course. If your child can’t eat pizza\, please bring them something they can have for dinner. Parents\, join us in the gallery for eats\, drinks\, and paint your own rabbit if you like. The movie will be shown in the classroom when the kids finish dinner. \nThis event is fun for the whole family\, with food\, drink\, and fresh popcorn. \nThis event is free for Bay School members and kids and $5 for adult non-members. SUMMARY:Ebenezer Baptist Choir Performance
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month\, the Mathews Historical Museum is pleased to host performances by  the Men’s and the Women’s Chorus of our local Ebenezer Baptist Church\,  at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center. One of the male group’s most recent performances was before a very appreciative audience at the Christmas sing-along at Mathews’ Central United Methodist Church. The men’s group has been in existence for 27 years.  Mr. Herbert Carter is president of the men’s group\, which is comprised of 11 men ranging in age from 25 to 90. They are well known throughout the area. Mr. Carter is also known by many as one of the original members of the Dynatones\, an R & B group that was very popular in the area during the 1950’s and 60’s. The group’s focus is solely gospel music\, and they accept invitations to perform at local events\, as time allows. Members of the group include Herbert Carter\, Sr. Kenneth Reed\, Kendrick Reed\, Terry Reed\, Terry Hearn\, Morris Thompson\, Stanley Dixon\, Edwin Billups\, Louis Brown\,Rickie Burrel and the Rev. Eric Robinson. The women’s chorus has been an integral part of the church’s choral activities. Marilyn Burrel serves as president. Pastor Robinson will introduce the groups\, share their histories and speak to his experience as Pastor at Ebenezer church for the past 30 years.  There is no charge for this event and reservations are not required.

SUMMARY:Movie Night at the Museum: The Loving Story
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mathews Historical Museum for the Reopening/ Inauguration of the Movie Room! The MHM invites you to “fall in love with history” this February\, in recognition of Black History Month! After a January closure for renovations\, Mathews Museum Movie Night returns Friday\, February 16th with a screening of “The Loving Story\,” a 2011 HBO documentary which tells the heart-rending story of Richard and Mildred Loving. \nThe documentary details how their marriage changed the fabric of Virginia\, and the nation\, during the Civil Rights Era. Doors will open at 5:00. They’ll kick off the evening with a reception\, then a brief meeting at 5:30\, including recognition of former Museum Director\, John Caramia. The film will begin at 6 PM. \nThe HBO documentary is about a famous case that went before the Supreme Court in the 1960s. “The Loving Story” is very compelling. Directed by Nancy Buirski\, written by Nancy Buirski and Susie Ruth Powell\, the movie stars Jane Alexander\, Lindsay Almon\, Jr. and Edward L. Ayers. The movie will be aired in the newly renovated movie room of the Mathews Historical Museum\, 200 Main Street. \nThere is no charge for this event. There are no reservations\, and early attendance is recommended.

DESCRIPTION:As you know\, this event has become one of the biggest social events of the winter in Mathews! With over 500 people at the Piankatank Ruritan Club the night before the Super Bowl\, it is a fun and enjoyable experience. \nThe Mathews Historical Museum\, Mathews Land Conservancy\, Mathews Kiwanis Club\, Mathews Bay School and Mathews Rotary Club will not only compete for the “BEST CHILI” in Mathews\, but they will also raise money to improve the lives of Mathews’ citizens! As in the past\, the Rotary Club will be awarding the “Judges Choice & People’s Choice” individual awards as a $200 donation to the winning participant organization instead of a trophy! There will also be a prize of $100 for the “Best Decorated Booth” competition! \nTake out orders will be available for purchase at the door and each booth will have quarts available for sale after 6:00 PM.

DESCRIPTION:Join Mathews Gardening Group on Wednesday\, January 24th at 10AM for an insightful presentation on the Use of Native Plants in Shoreline Stabilization: Living Shorelines. \nWhat is a Living Shoreline?  A Living Shoreline is a management practice that provides erosion control and water quality benefits; protects\, restores or enhances natural shoreline habitat; and maintains coastal processes through the strategic placement of native plants\, stone\, sand fill\, and other structural and organic materials. The Middle Peninsula Planning District\, comprised of six counties\, is the primary planning agency for over 1\,000 miles of shoreline.  Rural Mathews County\, with its over 300 miles of shoreline\, comprises a third of that catchment area.  Are you aware of agencies and resources available to you to help combat failing shorelines?  What can property owners who are experiencing erosion from increasing storm intensity and wave energy do and who can help them? \nGuest speaker Aaron Wendt currently serves the Commonwealth as a Shoreline Engineer with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and will address these and other questions. Working in the agency’s Shoreline Erosion Advisory Service (SEAS)\, Aaron provides technical assistance and  conducts site investigation and analysis\, issues written recommendations and advisory reports\, reviews engineering designs and construction plans\, and conducts on‐site construction inspections.  The presentation will be held at the Virginia Cooperative Extension office at 10494 Buckley Hall Road\, Suite B  Mathews\, VA 23109. \nComprised mostly of beginner or intermediate gardeners\, Mathews Gardening Group meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month and will offer regional experts as speakers to continuously improve and sharpen each member’s gardening skills.  For more information\, please contact the Mathews VCE office at (804) 725-7196 or by email at r.morris@vt.edu for more information.
