DESCRIPTION:Your favorite Ukulele group is coming back to the Sibley’s General Store on July 4th weekend! \nStop by to hear them jam on July 3rd\, 11am – 1pm. \nAbout the Ukesters: \nA small group of stray ukulele players in Richmond found each other in 2015 and began to practice around a dining room table. Word got out\, and soon there were 10 of us with a book of songs ever expanding. Today we are a group of some 22 players\, most of whom have been with us for at least five years. With an occasional accordion\, clarinet\, banjo\, autoharp  and steel drum\, we play a variety of songs—familiar uke songs from the 1930s\, Beetles\, gospel\, popular and bluegrass. We are a dedicated group\, having as much fun as we can. We practice weekly and until Covid\, had a regular schedule performing for retirement communities in and around Richmond. DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Maritime Foundation (MMF) will be having a\nMaritime Heritage Day Festival\nSat.\, July 17\n10 am – 3 pm \nCome join us at this outdoor event which will take place on the lawn beside the Maritime Museum.\nTents will be set up showing various activities and projects we are currently working on. Many  photos of past and present will be displayed.  MMF members can sign up for a Sunday Cruise on our buy boat The Peggy\, or for boat building and boat repair workshops which will take place at our Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop (GIBS). There will be interesting outdoor boat exhibits\, country music by John Atkinson of Gwynn’s Island\, food available by Backwoods BBQ \, and much more. The Museum will be open to browse\, see our new exhibits\, visit our gift shop\, and to be surprised at all you find in this little museum.  We hope our membership and friends in the community will take advantage of this opportunity to come talk to us in person and learn more about the activities planned for this summer. \nDirections:  The Maritime Museum is located at 482 Main Street\, Mathews\, VA.  It is on the right of Rt. 14\, just beyond the old courthouse area leading toward New Point.  Parking that day will be along the road on Main Street.  For those who prefer walking from the Courthouse area in town\, it is just a short walk down the street from the Bay School.  There are other events taking place on Main Street on July 17\, so come on down to add us to your adventure. \nRain date will be the following Saturday\, July 24. \nMathews Maritime Foundation\nwww.mathewsmaritime.com\n804-725-4444

Once you complete the course\, the course completion certificate or card is what is required to operate a vessel.\n\n\n\n\nA USCG Auxiliary certified instructor will lead the sessions\, held at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad building on Cricket Hill Road in Mathews County. This course is free to the public but advanced signup is required due to facility size limitations. A minimum of 5 participants is needed to conduct the course; the classroom maximum is 15. DESCRIPTION:Annual Labor Day Event \n3 mile run + 2.5 mile kayak\, starting & ending in Mathews Courthouse area\, transition point at Williams Wharf. Sound like a good time to you? Then feel free to join us on Labor Day 2021: Monday\, Sep 6th. That’s right: it’s free & open to everyone. \nLocation. This event will start and end at Put-In-Creek park and pavilion in Mathews Courthouse. Just a few years ago\, the town of Mathews built a new dock and kayak ramp there so getting in and out of the water is really easy. The creek is tidal so we schedule it to finish very near high tide to ensure no one gets stuck in the mud. \nHigh Tide on 6 Sep 2021 is 9:02am ET \n2021 Schedule. Participants will drop off kayak at Williams Wharf at 8am (we’ll have a volunteer posted there to keep an eye on the kayaks and assist with the transition) and drive to starting area at Put-In-Creek park. We’ll have brief instructions and start as close to 8:30am as possible. We’ve done this course several times – no one has done it as a relay\, but that is certainly an option if you want to divide it up with another person.

SUMMARY:Gallery Artist of the Month - Chris Jeanguenat
DESCRIPTION:The October artist of the month in the Art Speaks gallery is artist Chris Jeanguenat. Chris describes herself as an Illustrator. Each of her paintings tells a story and beckons the viewer to imagine themselves as part of that story. She primarily uses chalk mineral paint as her painting medium. Many of Chris’s paintings are framed in beautiful ornate antique frames that she finds and pairs perfectly with her paintings. There is a wide variety of Chris’s work in her exhibit this month; miniature paintings\, larger paintings\, furniture\, prints\, notecards and functional art. Chris shares her home in Suffolk with her husband\, youngest son and two sweet Pit Bulls. Her art work can be seen in literary magazines\, art magazines such as Creative Chalk Painting\, and used for art lessons for children in England. Chris is currently a regular contributor for “Painting World Magazine” as a writer and cover artist. October 1st-31st\, Monday-Saturday 10am to 4pm

The 2021 ornament features New Point Comfort Lighthouse\, first illuminated in 1805\, the third oldest surviving lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay\, and the tenth oldest in the nation. Other items for sale include all MCHS publications and Captain Sally Tompkins dolls. Martha W. McCartney will be on hand to sign her book Mathews County Virginia: Lost Landscapes\, Untold Stories.
