DESCRIPTION:Dr. John A. Coulter II will give a public presentation entitled\, “General James Henry Lane: Soldier and Educator” on Thursday\, June 13\, 2024. He will speak at 7 p.m. at Mathews Memorial Library\, 251 Main Street\, Mathews. \nGeneral James Henry Lane\, a Mathews County native\, was the youngest general in the Army of Northern Virginia. After graduating from VMI\, he received a Master’s degree from UVA and worked at six military schools before and after the Civil War. He was commander of the brigade that became known as “Lee’s Immortals” and is considered the Father of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. \nMathews County Historical Society and the Mathews Memorial Library are sponsoring Dr. Coulter’s presentation\, which is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Museum will host a discussion of the use of silver in the colonial period. The presentation will be in the Museum’s newly renovated and updated media room. It is open to the public and there is no charge for this event. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of the history of the use of Virginia silver in the 1700s and 1800s. The guest speaker will be the Museum’s Vice Chair\, Tom Karow\, who is a silver historian and is a member of the Mathews VA250 Committee. He will discuss the silversmiths of Virginia prior to 1865\, when silversmithing was considered a craft and appreciated as an art form. \nThe displaying of coin silver and sterling silver was once considered a sign of wealth and status. Examples of the art of fine dining during the 1700s\, with displays of silver\, can still be viewed at Mount Vernon and Monticello. Karow will have on display\, a wide selection of silver on loan from area dealers and owners\, showing examples of Virginia silver that represent pieces of historical significance\, some dating back into the mid 18th century\, handmade by some of Virginia’s most renowned silversmiths. Karow\, a well known local historian and Mathews resident\, is President of the Fairfield Foundation and a member of the Mathews VA250 Committee. \nCome join us as we step back in time at the Mathews Museum! Reservations are not required.

DESCRIPTION:May Faire 2024: A Rural Life\, will explore our county’s history—farming fishing and families—from the past to the present\, in a County Fair atmosphere! This year’s May Faire children’s corner will be hosted by the local Kiwanis Club and will feature a midway of games with electric basketball\, rubber duckies\, hatching baby chickens brought to us by CA & J Farm\, a petting zoo area\, a Hungarian pig and an archaeological dig sponsored by Fairfield Foundation. \nInside the Museum there will be special exhibits relative to Mathews’ history\, a quilt and juried crafts\, jams and jellies judging\, and outside on the Court Green there will be educational as well as vendor booths.  And music and food all day.  Bring the family and enjoy the day! \nNOTE: As May Faire will include jams\, jellies\, and canned goods judging\, we are asking that you set aside some products now\, as it is too early in May for these products to be produced.  Thank you!

DESCRIPTION:4m Run\, 10m Ride or Run/Ride Duathlon: Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County is the host site of this annual race. Join runners & riders in this unique tour of one of Virginia’s special locations – then hang around to enjoy the music & food. \n4 mile road run\nStarting and ending at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, the route follows quiet backroads around the island\, with a constant view of the water. The race course is 4 miles and the cost is $30. For those looking for a shorter distance\, we will have a Free Fun Run open for everyone (distance just > 1 mile). \n10 mile bicycle ride\nWeaving around the backroads of Gwynn’s Island\, you’ll catch glimpses of the Chesapeake Bay\, Milford Sound\, and the popular campground & RV resort on the island as you complete the course. The route is 10 miles and the cost is $30. \nCombine the run & ride\nFeeling adventurous? Sign up for the combined Run & Ride and make it a duathlon. The 4 mile run and 10 mile ride routes are the same as the individual events described above – you’ll stage your bicycle so that as you complete the run leg\, you can immediately head out onto the bike course. The cost is $50.
