DESCRIPTION:32.3 miles from Mathews across the Chesapeake Bay lies the island of Tangier. More than two-thirds of it has become submerged since 1850\, and it is estimated that the encroaching waters of the Bay could drown it completely within a few decades. Those who are familiar with the history and people of the Island note that this daunting future has not dampened the spirits of its residents. \nAmong those documenting this courageous story is Richmond Times Dispatch feature writer\, Bill Lohmann\, whose most recently published work\, DR COPTR\, contains the story of the flying physician\, Dr. David Nichols\, who flew from his office in White Stone each week to serve the people of Tangier. Lohmann’s story evolved through a close relationship that developed over the span of writing the story\, both with Dr. Nichols and his family following the death of the beloved and revered physician.

SUMMARY:Caroling on the Creek
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go Christmas Caroling! Caroling on a creek! We will meet at Town Point Public Boat Launch off of Hwy 14N in Mathews and paddle our kayaks up Put-In Creek towards the town of Mathews and stop at various docks; the owners will have been pre-notified of our caroling… and sing Christmas carols! We’ll Carol for about an hour – hour and a half. Afterwards we will go to Dianne’s\, a short 4 mile Drive for Chili and snacks. If you can\, please bring a side dish. If it needs to be kept warm\, let me know and we can make arrangements to get it to my house before caroling. BYOB! \nI’ll bring a speaker and pre-loaded carols\, I’ll also print the words to the songs and laminate them but please be prepared to sing! Bring a headlamp so you can see the sheets and sing!\nAlso with solar lighting and all the other stuff they have out there these days it would be fun to decorate\, or at least light up our kayaks. This effort is going to be in conjunction with our local Mathews kayak LIPPS group. I think it will be a lot of fun! \nWe will launch at 4:30 PM so be there in time to get your kayak decorated and ready to launch on time. \nIt will be dark so you must bring a white light per Coast Guard requirements. Also the water will be cold and the air temperature will be cold so dress accordingly in neoprene and dry tops and pants or dry suits. We reserve the right to turn away anyone not dressed for immersion. If the air temperature is below 40 degrees or if it is raining this meet-up will be cancelled. \nYou must wear a PFD.
