SUMMARY:Thomas James Store Open
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas James Store\, maintained by the Mathews County Historical Society\, Inc.\, is a rare and excellent example of an early nineteenth-century rural commercial building. Although it has undergone some alterations and was almost certainly moved from its original location\, the store retains much of its original fabric and is remarkably well preserved for its age. It dates to c. 1820\, and appears to be one of the oldest buildings in the downtown commercial district. It is a registered National Historic Building.

SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:Tompkins Cottage\, located on Brickbat Road\, takes its name from former owner Christopher Tompkins\, a mariner\, wealthy landowner\, and store-owner\, who bought the property and structure in 1837. \nThe cottage has been undergoing reorganization and is incorporating new themes in its displays. The recently-restored coat belonging to Capt. Sally L. Tompkins is featured in the exhibit area honoring her. \nOther new items on display in the cottage are enlarged reprints of photographs taken in 1935 by Francis Benjamin Johnston (1865-1952)\, which are housed at The Library of Congress.  \nOne is of Poplar Grove\, which was once part of the extensive holdings of Samuel Williams (1725-1789) and birthplace of Capt. Sally Tompkins. The second is of the Tidemill at Poplar Grove. The present structure replaced the original colonial mill that burned during the Civil War. The mill operated until 1912 and is the only remaining tidemill in Virginia.

DESCRIPTION:Also known as “Beat The Jellies” we’re doing it again! This is our 4th Horn Harbor Duathlon – the date/time selected is to avoid jellyfish (which arrive in the area late June/ early July) and to coincide with high tide. You do not need to be a club member to participate in this NO COST\, non-competitive event. OK – we do time it (overall & splits) but just for bragging rights. \nMeet at the Johnson’s Home in Mathews Co – run 4.75 miles to Horn Harbor Marina then swim 0.85 miles back to their dock. In Hawaiian\, Kukini means “swift runner or messenger\, employed by old chiefs\, with a premium on their speed” – come enjoy the Island-themed event around Mathews County Virginia’s Gwynn’s Island!  \nTHE CAUSE\nAs our club’s biggest fundraiser\, the proceeds for this event enable us to offer support for local organizations and events. Our co-organizers: Mathews Family YMCA and Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, will receive half of the day’s intake. VTTR sponsored the Mathews Markets Days 5k\, and in 2017 joined VDOT Adopt-A-Highway program and is keeping a section of our local roadways trash-free (a busy 2-mile section on Rte 14)!  \nTHE COURSES\nYou will enjoy this FAST\, FLAT course along the island coast with overlooks of Chesapeake Bay along the way.
