DESCRIPTION:The Bay School and Hands Across Mathews are excited to be hosting our fourth annual Empty Bowls event. The hand-made bowls are starting to stack up on the shelves at the Bay School and more are being made as we speak.  \nAn incredible assortment of hand-made soups\, breads\, and cookies will be served during the event.  Familiar potters and chefs will be joined by some new hands\, both novice and expert.   \nThis is a ticketed event.  Tickets may be reserved on the Bay School website or purchased at the Bay School starting Thanksgiving week.  All proceeds go directly to Hands Across Mathews\, so cash or check only\, please.  Your $15 ticket gives you a hand-crafted bowl to be treasured or given as a gift; a simple lunch of soup and bread\, to nourish you and remind you of all the empty bowls in the world; and the warm fuzzy feeling of having helped fill your neighbors’ empty bowls here in Mathews.  We will sell as many tickets as we have bowls.  Extra soup may be purchased for $5 a serving\, and additional donations are of course welcome and appreciated. We hope you join us!

SUMMARY:1984 Re-Voyage of the Godspeed
DESCRIPTION:The Jamestown Foundation’s 1984 re-creation of the 1607 Voyage of the Godspeed from England to Jamestown will be presented by one of her crew\, Mr. Joe Gowdey\, at the January Speaker Meeting of the Mathews Maritime Foundation. \nOn April 30\, 1985\, a replica of the 1607 ship Godspeed departed London to begin her journey across the Atlantic in commemoration of the original voyage some 379 years earlier.  The replica vessel was as close a representation of a 17th-century sailing ship as was possible. \nMr. Gowdey was an Electrical Engineer who worked for NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) for 30 years\, in a number of capacities.  He is one of around 5\,000 people who have their autograph (in 2 places) on the surface of the planet Mars\, as one of the many who worked on the Viking-Mars Landers of the 1970’s.  He retired in 1993 as Head of the LaRC Electrical Systems Section\, which was occupied at the time in designing and building special purpose computers for both aero and space experiments.

The other award is the Judge’s Award and is decided by a panel of professional food judges. DESCRIPTION:The Court House Players will present the comedy classic “Bus Stop” by William Inge Thursday through Sunday\, March 8-11\, at the Piankatank Ruritan Club\, Rt. 198\, Hudgins. \nFour flawed but charming travelers are waylaid at Grace’s Diner by a ferocious snow storm and find themselves warmed\, welcomed\, and sometimes chastened by the four locals who are snowed in with them. Directed by Anita Minuth. \nTickets for the Thursday through Saturday dinner theater performances are $30 each. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.\, with curtain at 8.  \nThe menu is herb-crusted pork tenderloin\, baked sweet potato\, green beans with bacon and tomatoes\, mixed field greens salad\, rolls\, tea or coffee\, and apple dumpling with ice cream. There will also be a wine and beer cash bar. \nThe Sunday\, show-only matinee is $17 in advance for adults; $18 at the door. SUMMARY:Thomas James Store Open
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas James Store\, maintained by the Mathews County Historical Society\, Inc.\, is a rare and excellent example of an early nineteenth-century rural commercial building. Although it has undergone some alterations and was almost certainly moved from its original location\, the store retains much of its original fabric and is remarkably well preserved for its age. It dates to c. 1820\, and appears to be one of the oldest buildings in the downtown commercial district. It is a registered National Historic Building.

SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:Tompkins Cottage\, located on Brickbat Road\, takes its name from former owner Christopher Tompkins\, a mariner\, wealthy landowner\, and store-owner\, who bought the property and structure in 1837. \nThe cottage has been undergoing reorganization and is incorporating new themes in its displays. The recently-restored coat belonging to Capt. Sally L. Tompkins is featured in the exhibit area honoring her. \nOther new items on display in the cottage are enlarged reprints of photographs taken in 1935 by Francis Benjamin Johnston (1865-1952)\, which are housed at The Library of Congress.  \nOne is of Poplar Grove\, which was once part of the extensive holdings of Samuel Williams (1725-1789) and birthplace of Capt. Sally Tompkins. The second is of the Tidemill at Poplar Grove. The present structure replaced the original colonial mill that burned during the Civil War. The mill operated until 1912 and is the only remaining tidemill in Virginia.
