DESCRIPTION:The Courthouse Community Orchestra will present a “Holiday Concert” on November 19\, 2017 in the Mathews High School Auditorium beginning at 3 PM.  The program will feature a selection of seasonal favorites including “Sleigh Ride” and “A Christmas Festival” (both by Leroy Anderson) as well as “Fantasia on Greensleeves” by Ralph Vaughan Williams\, “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin\, and other audience pleasing music including “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar\, “Take Five” by Paul Desmond\, and “Little Irish Suite”\, also by Leroy Anderson.  Join us for a delightful musical event just right for a Sunday afternoon. \nThe concert is free. \nThe orchestra is a volunteer group of local residents.  It is conducted by Guy Hayden.

DESCRIPTION:The Bay School and Hands Across Mathews are excited to be hosting our fourth annual Empty Bowls event. The hand-made bowls are starting to stack up on the shelves at the Bay School and more are being made as we speak.  \nAn incredible assortment of hand-made soups\, breads\, and cookies will be served during the event.  Familiar potters and chefs will be joined by some new hands\, both novice and expert.   \nThis is a ticketed event.  Tickets may be reserved on the Bay School website or purchased at the Bay School starting Thanksgiving week.  All proceeds go directly to Hands Across Mathews\, so cash or check only\, please.  Your $15 ticket gives you a hand-crafted bowl to be treasured or given as a gift; a simple lunch of soup and bread\, to nourish you and remind you of all the empty bowls in the world; and the warm fuzzy feeling of having helped fill your neighbors’ empty bowls here in Mathews.  We will sell as many tickets as we have bowls.  Extra soup may be purchased for $5 a serving\, and additional donations are of course welcome and appreciated. We hope you join us!

SUMMARY:1984 Re-Voyage of the Godspeed
DESCRIPTION:The Jamestown Foundation’s 1984 re-creation of the 1607 Voyage of the Godspeed from England to Jamestown will be presented by one of her crew\, Mr. Joe Gowdey\, at the January Speaker Meeting of the Mathews Maritime Foundation. \nOn April 30\, 1985\, a replica of the 1607 ship Godspeed departed London to begin her journey across the Atlantic in commemoration of the original voyage some 379 years earlier.  The replica vessel was as close a representation of a 17th-century sailing ship as was possible. \nMr. Gowdey was an Electrical Engineer who worked for NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) for 30 years\, in a number of capacities.  He is one of around 5\,000 people who have their autograph (in 2 places) on the surface of the planet Mars\, as one of the many who worked on the Viking-Mars Landers of the 1970’s. Our motto is “HELP US\, HELP OTHERS!” as all funds raised go back to help Mathews citizens! Everything is provided and you get to be a voter for the People’s Choice Award. The other award is the Judge’s Award and is decided by a panel of professional food judges. DESCRIPTION:The Court House Players will present the comedy classic “Bus Stop” by William Inge Thursday through Sunday\, March 8-11\, at the Piankatank Ruritan Club\, Rt. 198\, Hudgins. \nFour flawed but charming travelers are waylaid at Grace’s Diner by a ferocious snow storm and find themselves warmed\, welcomed\, and sometimes chastened by the four locals who are snowed in with them. Directed by Anita Minuth. \nTickets for the Thursday through Saturday dinner theater performances are $30 each. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.\, with curtain at 8.  \nThe menu is herb-crusted pork tenderloin\, baked sweet potato\, green beans with bacon and tomatoes\, mixed field greens salad\, rolls\, tea or coffee\, and apple dumpling with ice cream. There will also be a wine and beer cash bar. \nThe Sunday\, show-only matinee is $17 in advance for adults; $18 at the door. Students are $5 with ID. \nTickets are available at Flowers from the Heart and Mathews Pharmacy in Mathews\, Hurds Inc. in Deltaville\, Office Supply in Gloucester\, Franktronics in Hayes\, and Golden Creations in Gloucester Point.
