SUMMARY:Put-In-Creek Duathlon: Run + Kayak
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3 mile run + 2.5 mile kayak\, starting & ending in Mathews Courthouse area\, transition point at Williams Wharf. If that sounds like a good time to you\, then feel FREE to join us on Labor Day 2020: Monday\, Sep 7th. That’s right: it’s free & open to everyone. It’s a ‘just for fun’ event\, but don’t get me wrong – there are some who will be competing with each other\, but all in good fun. \n \nLocation. This event will start and end at Put-In-Creek park and pavilion in Mathews Courthouse. Just a few years ago\, the town of Mathews built a new dock and kayak ramp there so getting in and out of the water is really easy. The creek is tidal so we schedule it to finish very near high tide to ensure no one gets stuck in the mud. High Tide on 7 Sep 2020 is 12:46pm ET \nSchedule. Participants will drop off kayak at Williams Wharf at 11am (we’ll have a volunteer posted there to keep an eye on the kayaks and assist with the transition) and drive to starting area at Put-In-Creek park. We’ll have brief instructions and start as close to 11:30am as possible. We’ve done this course several times – no one has done it as a relay\, but that is certainly an option if you want to divide it up with another person. \nBring a lunch. We’ll enjoy the brand new pavilion at the finish area for a bring-your-own picnic lunch. Again: everyone & anyone is welcome to participate: you do not have to be a VTTR club member or Mathews resident to take part. \nTiming. Timing equipment will be on hand if we have volunteers show up to operate it. So if you’re interested in your overall time\, be prepared with your own watch/ timing device. A volunteer will be at transition point only. The course is on open road & open water – competitors will participating at their own risk. Event will be held rain-or-shine – it will only be cancelled on race morning due to lightning (posted on Virginia Tidewater Trailrunners Facebook page). DESCRIPTION:This Kid’s Kayak Camp is for ages 10 – 15. \nThere will be 6 children per camp. At camp your child will become familiar with all of the parts of the kayak; how to enter and exit the kayak properly; how to maneuver with skill and how to self-rescue and group rescue. All of this will be taught in a fun environment through kid friendly games. As the week progresses and skill level increases we will venture into the different areas of Mathews to paddle and explore the Eco Systems of surrounding waters and have fun kayaking with dolphin. This is our 4th Horn Harbor Duathlon – the date/time selected is to avoid jellyfish (which arrive in the area late June/ early July) and to coincide with high tide. You do not need to be a club member to participate in this NO COST\, non-competitive event. OK – we do time it (overall & splits) but just for bragging rights. \nMeet at the Johnson’s Home in Mathews Co – run 4.75 miles to Horn Harbor Marina then swim 0.85 miles back to their dock. DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Family YMCA is pleased to once again host the 5k-plus race* and 1-mile fun run this year in conjunction with the annual Mathews Market Days festival. Both races start and end at the YMCA (10746 Buckley Hall Road\, Mathews). Awards will be presented to the fastest Male & Female overall 5k-plus finisher\, and to the top finishers in 9 age groups. All of the 1-mile finishers will receive a ribbon at the end of the course. \nChild watch is available during the race so bring the kiddos. We’ll keep them busy if you run the 5k-plus. When you’re done\, you can join them in the 1-mile fun run! Stick around after both races are complete for the post-race raffle – and you may just win scrumptious homemade treats.
