SUMMARY:Put-In-Creek Duathlon: Run + Kayak
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3 mile run + 2.5 mile kayak\, starting & ending in Mathews Courthouse area\, transition point at Williams Wharf. If that sounds like a good time to you\, then feel FREE to join us on Labor Day 2020: Monday\, Sep 7th. That’s right: it’s free & open to everyone. It’s a ‘just for fun’ event\, but don’t get me wrong – there are some who will be competing with each other\, but all in good fun. \n \nLocation. This event will start and end at Put-In-Creek park and pavilion in Mathews Courthouse. Just a few years ago\, the town of Mathews built a new dock and kayak ramp there so getting in and out of the water is really easy. The creek is tidal so we schedule it to finish very near high tide to ensure no one gets stuck in the mud. High Tide on 7 Sep 2020 is 12:46pm ET \nSchedule. Participants will drop off kayak at Williams Wharf at 11am (we’ll have a volunteer posted there to keep an eye on the kayaks and assist with the transition) and drive to starting area at Put-In-Creek park. We’ll have brief instructions and start as close to 11:30am as possible. We’ve done this course several times – no one has done it as a relay\, but that is certainly an option if you want to divide it up with another person. \nBring a lunch. We’ll enjoy the brand new pavilion at the finish area for a bring-your-own picnic lunch. Again: everyone & anyone is welcome to participate: you do not have to be a VTTR club member or Mathews resident to take part. \nTiming. Timing equipment will be on hand if we have volunteers show up to operate it. So if you’re interested in your overall time\, be prepared with your own watch/ timing device. A volunteer will be at transition point only. The course is on open road & open water – competitors will participating at their own risk. Event will be held rain-or-shine – it will only be cancelled on race morning due to lightning (posted on Virginia Tidewater Trailrunners Facebook page). There will be 2 Spring Cleanup dates this year. \nPlease let us know if you can attend by filling out the form below: \nhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LCPTBF6 \nTwo Spring Cleanup Dates are:\nEarth Day\, Mon.\, April 22nd\nMiddle Peninsula Chapter\, Master Naturalists would like your help in cleaning Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve\, and local birding and wildlife trails. \nCommunity Cleanup\, Sat.\, April 27th\, 8am-12pm\nThis is a county-wide cleanup sponsored by the Mathews Visitor and Information Center. \n8am-9am – Check-in\, pick up supplies\, free coffee and donuts from the Visitor Center. Note that all groups must have someone over 18 years old and are responsible for their own transportation. \n9am-12pm – Clean a roadway with your group. Keep count of bags collected and leave our orange trash bags on the side of the road. We will have a list of high priority roads if your group does not have a place in mind. \n12pm – Return supplies\, and come back for a free pizza lunch! \nWe will provide two FREE meals\, and all the equipment you will need: vests\, trash bags\, gloves\, and nets. We recommend you wear long sleeved shirts\, pants\, and waterproof boots.

DESCRIPTION:Lighthouse Keepers to be Honored\, April 13 in Mathews County\nThe memory of six lighthouse keepers will be kept alive in public ceremonies by members of the Chesapeake Chapter\, United States Lighthouse Society and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Everyone interested is invited  to the graveside ceremonies to be held on April 13. Betty Collins\, Board Member of the Chesapeake Chapter and Event Coordinator of the Mathews USLHS Grave Marker Ceremonies\, states “recognizing lighthouse keepers and the life saving service that they rendered promotes an awareness of lighthouses and maritime history. Through the Chapter Grave Marker Program\, we share the unique stories of Chesapeake Bay area lighthouse keepers while bringing families and communities together to honor the past.” \nThe Keepers to be honored on April 13 in separate graveside ceremonies are: \n*Frank Raymond Lewis who served at 6 lighthouses including those at Stingray Point and Great Wicomico. Keeper Lewis assisted rendering aid to the disabled yacht Red Wing. \n*Nelson Stanley Atherton who served at 4 lighthouses including Smith Point where he was keeper for 21 years. \n *Levi D. Marchant who served at 3 lighthouses for a total of 38 years\, spending 32 years at Stingray Point.   \n*Isaac Foster who commissioned the first three- masted schooner in America\, The Ferrata\, built in 1827 in Mathews County. Foster went on to serve at New Point Comfort and passed away in 1854 while in service working at New Point Comfort. \n*William James Diggs who served at 3 lighthouses including York Spit where he survived the 1933 hurricane by holding on to the station bell. \n*Wesley Foster Ripley who served 6 lighthouses for a total of 35 years.
