SUMMARY:Row the Chesapeake
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to celebrate the best of Mathews County waterways!\n \nOn Saturday July 13\, 2024\, Mathews Land Conservancy and Mobjack Rowing Association host “Row the Chesapeake”.\nRowers Matt Muffelman (Mathews\, VA) and James Dietz (Springfield\, MA) are teaming up for a row across the Chesapeake Bay to highlight public recreational opportunities of the local waterways. Muffelman\, Vice President of Mobjack Rowing Association (MRA)\, explains “This event is a way to bring attention to the beauty of our local waterways and raise awareness of the efforts being put into the growth and potential of Williams Wharf Landing.”\n\n\nThe event centers around a 16-mile journey across the Chesapeake Bay starting from Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore and ending at the historic Williams Wharf Landing on the East River in Mathews.  Williams Wharf Landing is a  public access waterfront site owned and operated by Mathews Land Conservancy (MLC). MLC was formed in 1994 to protect the site from destructive industrial use and to return this pristine section of the Mobjack Bay back to the community. MLC’s mission is to preserve and protect waterway access for public use\, benefit\, and education.\n\n\nJoining the event as keynote speakers will be Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman and Joel Dunn\, CEO of the Chesapeake Conservancy.  Wittman is Co-Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Caucus\, Co-Chair of the Congressional Chesapeake Bay Watershed Caucus\, and author of Chesapeake Bay Accountability and Recovery Act (2015).  Dunn leads Chesapeake Conservancy’s efforts to increase public access for everyone and strengthen the connection between people and the Chesapeake Bay watershed to promote a greater appreciation for the need to conserve the Chesapeake’s landscapes and special places.\n\n\nWilliams Wharf Landing and Mobjack Rowing are near and dear to Muffelman’s heart – it is where he learned to row in 1995. His rowing career continued at Dartmouth College and then with the US National Team (2005-2010). He won gold at the 2008 World Rowing Championships. Muffelman is now the Business Manager for HUDSON Boat Works\, USA.\n\n\nJames Dietz is a professional rower who works for HYDROW\, a Live Outdoor Reality workout company that brings video of outdoor\, on-water rowing to members in their home.  James has represented the United States in many competitions and has finished top 6 in the Olympic Trials on multiple occasions.\nPremier rowing manufacturer HUDSON Boat Works will be providing two newly designed one-man open water rowing shells for the event. The HUDSON Coastal SHARK has a dynamic and durable design for the rower who wants to explore larger bodies of water than in the traditional flat-water sport.\n\n\nLocated at Williams Wharf Landing is the Owens Maritime Center which is designed to be the preeminent waterway access\, education\, and events center in the region\, combining its natural ecology with stunning East River views and providing an exceptional venue for rowing. Once completed\, the building will house education and research facilities\, an elegant indoor/outdoor event space with catering kitchen\, and training facilities for local\, regional\, and national crew and water-based activity teams.  Mathews Land Conservancy relies solely on private donations\, grants\, and use fees for general operations as well as maintenance\, improvements\, and project construction.\n\n\nThe public is invited to celebrate the final leg of the journey up the East River.  Williams Wharf Landing will be open to the public at 3:30pm on Saturday July 13\, 2024 and we expect the rowers to cross the finish line about 4:30pm. After brief comments from our dignitaries and guests\, all are welcome to enjoy food from local food trucks Creekside Catering and Backwoods BBQ\, and music from Last Minute Grass.\n\n\nOpportunities are available for information booth space – please reach out to Gwen DeForge\, Operations Manager for more information. For more information\, please call 804.725.9685 or email usat info@mathewslandconservancy.org

SUMMARY:July Gardening Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mathews Gardening Group \nCome join us at the next Monthly Meeting! \nMeeting Notice \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 24\, 2024\, 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM \nWhere: Mathews County Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Main Office: (804) 725-7196 10494 Buckley Hall Road Suite B\, Mathews\, VA 23109 \nSpeaker & Topic: Pamela Darney\, Master Gardener and Master Naturalist  \nSeed Saving Strategies: When & How to Start! \nBONUS: SEED SWAP – BRING YOUR SEEDS TO EXCHANGE WITH OTHERS \nAbout Seed Saving: The practical understanding and value of saving seeds. Which seeds can be saved – how and when to do it? Which seeds are easier to save? What is scarification and stratification? Pamela will discuss her successes and failures in saving seeds and asks that you share your seed saving history with the group too. Why is seed saving so important? Saving seeds allows you to select for particular characteristics you might like to cultivate by selecting fruits or plants to harvest with those same traits. You can choose seeds with the best tasting\, largest\, earliest ripening fruits to save that would ensure these same qualities in the next generation. And it can save you money! \nAbout Pamela Darney: \nBrief Bio \nPamela is a Master Gardener\, class of 2022\, and then completed the Master Naturalist course in August of 2023 and has been a constant friend to the Mathews Gardening Group.  She is also a rookie Oyster Gardener – growing both the diploid and triploid varieties in the York River.  She has been keeping bees since 2020 and is fascinated by the hive mentality\, the life cycle of the honeybee (different for the queen\, worker\, and drone)\, and their dedication to the caring of the Queen.  \nPamela recently retired from full time work and has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and an MBA with a concentration in Finance. She is focusing on herbs\, dahlias\, and native plants – all which support providing food for the bees. \nStay afterwards for continued Q&A with the speaker. \nParking Notice – Members with mobility challenges please park near the Extension office entry beyond the lots halfway point. For others\, there is ample parking at the nearby Chesapeake Bank on the right of the building and parking at the lot to the left of the building. Thank you.
