Helms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father on land his family has owned for generations. Colby first dreamed of making music his life at age 12\, when a group of Blue Ridge Mountain old-time and bluegrass players performed songs like The Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ “Standing On The Rock” and the gospel classic “A Beautiful Life” at his father’s funeral in Boones Mill\, VA. To make his dream a reality\, he taught himself guitar\, banjo\, and mandolin by watching local performers and YouTube videos.

SUMMARY:Ebenezer Baptist Choir Performance
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month\, the Mathews Historical Museum is pleased to host performances by  the Men’s and the Women’s Chorus of our local Ebenezer Baptist Church\,  at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center. One of the male group’s most recent performances was before a very appreciative audience at the Christmas sing-along at Mathews’ Central United Methodist Church. The men’s group has been in existence for 27 years.  Mr. Herbert Carter is president of the men’s group\, which is comprised of 11 men ranging in age from 25 to 90. They are well known throughout the area. Mr. Carter is also known by many as one of the original members of the Dynatones\, an R & B group that was very popular in the area during the 1950’s and 60’s. The group’s focus is solely gospel music\, and they accept invitations to perform at local events\, as time allows. Members of the group include Herbert Carter\, Sr. Kenneth Reed\, Kendrick Reed\, Terry Reed\, Terry Hearn\, Morris Thompson\, Stanley Dixon\, Edwin Billups\, Louis Brown\,Rickie Burrel and the Rev. Eric Robinson. The women’s chorus has been an integral part of the church’s choral activities. Marilyn Burrel serves as president. Pastor Robinson will introduce the groups\, share their histories and speak to his experience as Pastor at Ebenezer church for the past 30 years.  There is no charge for this event and reservations are not required.

DESCRIPTION:Join Concerts by the Bay for an afternoon of fun! \nBrothers Brett and Jeff Cahoon stepped away from the success they’d achieved with their punk band Ten Years from Now and chose instead to see what they could do with the old-time jazz standards they’d admired for so long. The Cahoons filled out Good Shot Judy with a full complement of horns\, percussion and vocals. And magic happened: an ensemble that was bigger than the sum of its parts.\nIn a sense\, Good Shot Judy was already in the stars long ago\, during those formative decades from the 1930s on\, when small jazz combos\, big brass bands and the crooners who sang on top of them were forging an enduring style.\nGood Shot Judy is today a big amp jazz band that sets stages aflame nationwide. Audiences are captivated by the sound and spectacle of music that reaches through the time. They’re caught up in performance that has one foot dancing in the past and one in the here and now. \nTickets $25\, available at the Mathews County Visitor & Information Center and at the door.
