SUMMARY:Author William Geroux presenting "The Ghost Ships of Archangel"
DESCRIPTION:William Geroux\, author of Mathews Men\, will be at the Kingston Parish promoting his new book\, The Ghost Ships of Archangel.  \nThe Ghost Ships of Archangel will be published May 14 by Viking /Penguin. It’s a narrative non-fiction account of an Allied convoy in 1942 sailing across the \nArctic\, trying to get through the ice and the Germans to deliver a cargo of vital war supplies to the Soviet Union\, our tenuous ally. The convoy is hit by an unexpected crisis in an unforgiving place\, which inspires acts of courage and sacrifice\, and a daring flight into the polar ice field. \nThe story of convoy PQ-17 and the Ghost Ships is also a chapter in the very short history of America and Russia as allies. Allied convoys delivered precious supplies to Russia. But the Russians wanted more help than convoys at a time when the death toll in the Soviet fight against the Germans was soaring well into the millions — far\, far more deaths than America and Britain together would suffer in the entire war. Today the Arctic convoys are all but forgotten in America\, but much better remembered in Russia\, where they have figured into Russians’ views of the U.S. for generations. PQ-17 has been the subject of a popular Russian historical novel and more recently a TV miniseries. \nThe Arctic setting was so central to the story of the Ghost Ships – and so unfamiliar to me – that I tried to see as much of the convoy’s route as possible before writing about it. I ended up making two trips to Russia\, visiting Archangel\, Murmansk and St. Petersburg. I explored the remote bay in Iceland where the convoy first gathered\, and the magnificent Norwegian fjords where the Germans waited for PQ-17. I hope The Ghost Ships of Archangel will be as compelling to read as it was to research. \nContact Tom Edwards for more information: tdedwards141@gmail.com or 804-725-5022

SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:The cottage is one of the oldest frame structures in the courthouse area. It contains changing exhibits and a collection of objects reflecting a typical home of the 1800s. The building is named for Christopher Tompkins of Poplar Grove\, a prominent local planter\, merchant\, sea captain and ship owner/builder. A room is dedicated to his daughter\, Capt. Sally Louisa Tompkins\, CSA. Capt. Sally was the first woman to be commissioned an officer in an American army. An excellent example of early Tidewater folk architecture\, distinctive features include beaded beams\, batten doors and wrought iron hardware as well as an unusual door at the turn in the steep stairway. Over the years\, the building has been a mercantile establishment\, a tailor shop\, a cobbler shop\, a tea room and a residence. For much of the twentieth century it was known as the old Miller house. \nThe cottage was bought by the county from a private owner in 1965 and saved from planned demolition by the efforts of a dedicated group which rallied to preserve the historic building. In 1969 it was leased to the historical society for use as a museum and related educational purposes.

SUMMARY:Saving Lives\, Making Friends: The Flying Physician Who Kept His Promise To Tangier Island
DESCRIPTION:32.3 miles from Mathews across the Chesapeake Bay lies the island of Tangier. More than two-thirds of it has become submerged since 1850\, and it is estimated that the encroaching waters of the Bay could drown it completely within a few decades. Those who are familiar with the history and people of the Island note that this daunting future has not dampened the spirits of its residents. \nAmong those documenting this courageous story is Richmond Times Dispatch feature writer\, Bill Lohmann\, whose most recently published work\, DR COPTR\, contains the story of the flying physician\, Dr. David Nichols\, who flew from his office in White Stone each week to serve the people of Tangier. Lohmann’s story evolved through a close relationship that developed over the span of writing the story\, both with Dr. Nichols and his family following the death of the beloved and revered physician.

SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:Description: Tompkins Cottage\, located on Brickbat Road\, takes its name from former owner Christopher Tompkins\, a mariner\, wealthy landowner\, and store-owner\, who bought the property and structure in 1837. \nThe cottage has been undergoing reorganization and is incorporating new themes in its displays. The recently-restored coat belonging to Capt. Sally L. Tompkins is featured in the exhibit area honoring her. \nOther new items on display in the cottage are enlarged reprints of photographs taken in 1935 by Francis Benjamin Johnston (1865-1952)\, which are housed at The Library of Congress.  \nOne is of Poplar Grove\, which was once part of the extensive holdings of Samuel Williams (1725-1789) and birthplace of Capt. Sally Tompkins. The second is of the Tidemill at Poplar Grove. The present structure replaced the original colonial mill that burned during the Civil War. The mill operated until 1912 and is the only remaining tidemill in Virginia.
