SUMMARY:Rosenwald -documentary on Historic African American Schools
DESCRIPTION:Rosenwald film screening and discussion with Antioch School alumni and the National Historic Preservation Trust. \nIn the early 1900’s\, Owner and CEO of Sears & Roebuck\, Co. Julius Rosenwald used his considerable wealth to build more than 5\,000 schools for the benefit of African-Americans in the South. After the schools were desegregated\, most of these “Rosenwald” schools were lost and today only 10% of the original structures are still standing. \nMathews County is lucky to have one of the few remaining schools: the Antioch Rosenwald School\, which houses a museum of local African-American history. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All donations benefit the Antioch Rosenwald School.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series with John van-Schalkwyk
DESCRIPTION:John van-Schalkwyk\, an experienced coastal and offshore sailor\, will speak at the Mathews Maritime Foundation (MMF) speaker’s meeting on October 14th. He will relate his experiences on the 53 foot ketch “Super Maramu\,” from Florida non-stop to Ireland\, in May of this year with a couple who had not been offshore before. He will discuss about the couple\, his decision to sail with them\, the boat\, the weather and routing (and how it’s vastly superior to his early offshore experiences)\, and the passage. \nMr. van-Schalkwyk has recently done two types of sailing: local cruising in his own boat and offshore sailing in other peoples’ boats. He worked in Boston\, lived on Cape Cod and now lives in Nova Scotia. He has been a member of the Mathews Yacht Club for a number of years. Since 1988 he has owned “MORNING WATCH\,” a Luders 36 sloop built in Hong Kong in 1970. \nMr. van-Schalkwyk is also a professional photographer who retired in 1999 and will show some of his work. \nThe public is invited to enjoy this presentation free of charge on Wednesday\, October 14th\, at 7 PM\, at the MMF Museum\, 482 Main St.\, Mathews Court House\, VA.
