SUMMARY:1984 Re-Voyage of the Godspeed
DESCRIPTION:The Jamestown Foundation’s 1984 re-creation of the 1607 Voyage of the Godspeed from England to Jamestown will be presented by one of her crew\, Mr. Joe Gowdey\, at the January Speaker Meeting of the Mathews Maritime Foundation. \nOn April 30\, 1985\, a replica of the 1607 ship Godspeed departed London to begin her journey across the Atlantic in commemoration of the original voyage some 379 years earlier. The replica vessel was as close a representation of a 17th-century sailing ship as was possible. \nMr. Gowdey was an Electrical Engineer who worked for NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) for 30 years\, in a number of capacities. He is one of around 5\,000 people who have their autograph (in 2 places) on the surface of the planet Mars\, as one of the many who worked on the Viking-Mars Landers of the 1970’s. He retired in 1993 as Head of the LaRC Electrical Systems Section\, which was occupied at the time in designing and building special purpose computers for both aero and space experiments.

DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Maritime Foundation’s first speaker for the Winter Speaker Series will be CDR John “Jack” Yunker\, Sr.\, U.S.N. (Retired) on Thursday\, September 21 at 7pm at the Maritime Museum\, 482 Main Street. He will tell the story of the Liberty Ships that were designed to be built quickly in order to transport all objects and people during WWII. Brown”\, a Liberty Ship berthed in Baltimore\, that is maintained and sailed by volunteers during “living cruises” that take paying guests out for a day several times a year. Tours of the ship\, narrations\,docents\, re-enactments of significant WWII political and military figures and\, under favorable weather conditions \,aerial “dog fights”  overhead by mid-century authentic WWII military allied and enemy aircraft! A slide show of these tours will be shown during the talk. \nCMR Yunker graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy 48 years ago\, and became a Naval Aviator and commercial pilot\,while maintaining his USCG license as Unlimited Third Mate and Third Assistant Engineer. He lives in Heathsville\, Va.\, and is an enthusiastic volunteer with the John W. Brown project as a watch standing engineer during its cruises. \nAll are welcome to attend this interesting meeting\, and refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Gilbert Klingel: Man of Steel
DESCRIPTION:Film Director/Producer Dave Miller to introduce his newest film project: “Gilbert Klingel: Man of Steel” on Tuesday\, March 7 at 7 pm at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League building. \nNext Tuesday there will be a special event at the Civic League building to preview the upcoming PBS documentary about the sailboat “Freya” project and Gwynn’s Island boatbuilder\, Gilbert Klingel. Director/Producer Dave Miller will be there to show the film trailer and talk about this project. The film will feature Gwynn’s Island and the legendary Gwynn’s Island Boat Yard built by Klingel in the early 1950’s. It will tell the story about Gilbert’s life and works and the goal of bringing his steel hulled sailboat “Freya” back to the island where she was built in 1953. This vessel will be available for future generations to learn from and enjoy. When the boat arrives at the Gwynn’s Island Boat Yard in May\, we plan to have a celebration and would appreciate the ideas you may have on how to celebrate. \nLocal residents will appear in this documentary and our local museums\, the Mathews Maritime Foundation and the Gwynn’s Island Museum are supporting our efforts. We hope you can join us on March 7 and see how you too can become involved. You will be quite amazed at what we have achieved so far but we’ll need the help of everyone to make this film a big success. \nOther Chesapeake Bay films by Dave Miller include: Journey on the Chesapeake (2016) and Oysters\, Boats\, and Men (2013).

SUMMARY:Rosenwald -documentary on Historic African American Schools
DESCRIPTION:Rosenwald film screening and discussion with Antioch School alumni and the National Historic Preservation Trust. \nIn the early 1900’s\, Owner and CEO of Sears & Roebuck\, Co. Julius Rosenwald used his considerable wealth to build more than 5\,000 schools for the benefit of African-Americans in the South. After the schools were desegregated\, most of these “Rosenwald” schools were lost and today only 10% of the original structures are still standing. \nMathews County is lucky to have one of the few remaining schools: the Antioch Rosenwald School\, which houses a museum of local African-American history. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All donations benefit the Antioch Rosenwald School.
