DESCRIPTION:A community health screening for Mathews County residents will be held at\nAntioch Baptist Church (110 Antioch Rd. in Susan) on Thursday\, April 15 th from 5-\n7 p.m. Screening services offered will include body mass index\, blood pressure and HbA1c (test for determining diabetes). \nScreenings will be conducted by clinical staff and volunteers of Gloucester Mathews\nCare Clinic\, and this screening is made possible through a grant from the Mathews\nRotary Club. Rotarians will also be on hand to provide additional volunteer\nsupport. \nParticipants will also receive health information related to diabetes and\nhypertension\, information on eligibility and services offered by GMCC\, along with\nhealthy snacks. Those without health insurance are encouraged to attend. Our co-organizers: Mathews Family YMCA and Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, will receive half of the day’s intake. VTTR sponsored the Mathews Markets Days 5k\, and in 2017 joined VDOT Adopt-A-Highway program and is keeping a section of our local roadways trash-free (a busy 2-mile section on Rte 14)!  \nTHE COURSES\nYou will enjoy this FAST\, FLAT course along the island coast with overlooks of Chesapeake Bay along the way. Gwynn’s Island is one of Virginia’s little-known gems: a welcoming community\, scenic views\, and full of history. Stick around after the race and enjoy the Annual Gwynn’s Island Festival. DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Family YMCA is pleased to once again host the 5k-plus race* and 1-mile fun run this year in conjunction with the annual Mathews Market Days festival. Both races start and end at the YMCA (10746 Buckley Hall Road\, Mathews). Awards will be presented to the fastest Male & Female overall 5k-plus finisher\, and to the top finishers in 9 age groups. All of the 1-mile finishers will receive a ribbon at the end of the course. \nChild watch is available during the race so bring the kiddos. We’ll keep them busy if you run the 5k-plus. When you’re done\, you can join them in the 1-mile fun run! Stick around after both races are complete for the post-race raffle – and you may just win scrumptious homemade treats. DESCRIPTION:We are a growing group of friends who get together once a year for a “home based” challenge: starting and finishing from the Johnsons house on Horn Harbor (off Borum Creek). This is our church’s largest annual fundraiser and one of the “can’t miss” events in Mathews County. In 2016\, we have added a new feature to the celebration: a 5k race and 1 mile Volksmarch. Join us for exercise\, entertainment\, and the most authentic German cuisine you can get outside of Deutschland courtesy of our master chef\, Chris Hale. \nThe 2016 event is scheduled for Saturday\, Oct 15th. Race registration and meal tickets are available online – just go to “vttrunners.com/Oktoberfest” to sign up for either or both through noon on 10/15. Tickets sell out each year\, and onsite registration is not available. \nEvery race participant will receive a 22-oz custom commemorative German stein\, and awards will be presented to top male & female finishers\, along with top 2 finishers in 9 different age groups.
