DESCRIPTION:4m Run\, 10m Ride or Run/Ride Duathlon: Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County is the host site of this annual race. Join runners & riders in this unique tour of one of Virginia’s special locations – then hang around to enjoy the music & food. \n4 mile road run\nStarting and ending at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, the route follows quiet backroads around the island\, with a constant view of the water. The race course is 4 miles and the cost is $30. For those looking for a shorter distance\, we will have a Free Fun Run open for everyone (distance just > 1 mile). \n10 mile bicycle ride\nWeaving around the backroads of Gwynn’s Island\, you’ll catch glimpses of the Chesapeake Bay\, Milford Sound\, and the popular campground & RV resort on the island as you complete the course. The route is 10 miles and the cost is $30. \nCombine the run & ride\nFeeling adventurous? Sign up for the combined Run & Ride and make it a duathlon. The 4 mile run and 10 mile ride routes are the same as the individual events described above – you’ll stage your bicycle so that as you complete the run leg\, you can immediately head out onto the bike course. The cost is $50.

DESCRIPTION:Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon\nOctober 15\, 7am\nmocva.com/marathon \n \nRun along peaceful\, rural backroads in beautiful Mathews County\, Virginia. Enjoy the fast\, flat course that winds through dirt\, gravel and paved roads and past the serenity of one of Virginia’s last great countrysides. Registration will close on October 9 – cost is $50 for Half Marathon\, $75 for Full Marathon.\n \n\n\nThe race course is along open roads (not closed to traffic). “Caution Runner” signs will be prominently displayed along the route and participants are advised to be aware of other runners and motorists.\n\nAll participants in the Full & Half Marathon will receive a finisher medal and custom hooded sweatshirt to commemorate their accomplishment. Awards will be presented to fastest overall finishers and to winners in several categories.\nPost Event Activities will be held at the Put In Creek park pavilion. Race participants and spectators are encouraged to enjoy the Mathews Farmers Market which will be ongoing at the adjoining courthouse area.\nAll activities will wrap up at 1pm – race support will end at that time as well. Any racers who are still on the course after six hours will be offered transportation to the finish area by the event crew.

In Hawaiian\, Kukini means “swift runner or messenger\, employed by old chiefs\, with a premium on their speed” – come enjoy the Island-themed event around Mathews County Virginia’s Gwynn’s Island!  \nTHE CAUSE\nAs our club’s biggest fundraiser\, the proceeds for this event enable us to offer support for local organizations and events. Our co-organizers: Mathews Family YMCA and Gwynn’s Island Civic League\, will receive half of the day’s intake. VTTR sponsored the Mathews Markets Days 5k\, and in 2017 joined VDOT Adopt-A-Highway program and is keeping a section of our local roadways trash-free (a busy 2-mile section on Rte 14)!  \nTHE COURSES\nYou will enjoy this FAST\, FLAT course along the island coast with overlooks of Chesapeake Bay along the way. Gwynn’s Island is one of Virginia’s little-known gems: a welcoming community\, scenic views\, and full of history. Stick around after the race and enjoy the Annual Gwynn’s Island Festival. This is our 4th Horn Harbor Duathlon – the date/time selected is to avoid jellyfish (which arrive in the area late June/ early July) and to coincide with high tide.
