SUMMARY:Discussion on Quilt Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:JOIN WITH FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM for A  DISCUSSION on the NEW QUILT EXHIBIT  \nThe public is invited to hear local historian and genealogist\, Lori Jackson Black\, detail her journey in discovering\, researching and telling the stories about the extensive quilt collection which she and her husband\, Jay\, are proud and privileged to share.  The discussion program is a part of the 3-month quilt show  and the Museum’s newest exhibit\, “Threads  of Our History: Quilts of Mathews Virginia.”  Lori Jackson Black will review the history of the quilts and discuss her interest and involvement in them.  “A labor of love\,” said Lori\,  when she discovered a trove of quilts at the house of her husband’s aunt\, Carole Diggs Hindman. “More than 30 quilts were uncovered in closets\, on beds\, throughout the house\, in the attic\,” says Black\, “and then my detective mode set in!”  And she began her research on the family as well as the quilts. She will discuss their provenance\, history and style and will be available for questions. There will also be vintage quilts available for purchase\, some gently used\, as well as a raffle of a lovely quilt. \nThe exhibit will be at the Museum through the end of December\, and the Museum will be open on Fridays\, Saturdays and Sundays\, through December. Special tours may also be arranged by calling 804-695-4664 or emailing mathewsvamuseumfriends@gmail.com. \nFor additional information\, visit www.mathewsvamuseum.org. \nThere is no cost for this program and reservations are not required.

SUMMARY:July Gardening Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mathews Gardening Group \nCome join us at the next Monthly Meeting! \nMeeting Notice \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 24\, 2024\, 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM \nWhere: Mathews County Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Main Office: (804) 725-7196 10494 Buckley Hall Road Suite B\, Mathews\, VA 23109 \nSpeaker & Topic: Pamela Darney\, Master Gardener and Master Naturalist  \nSeed Saving Strategies: When & How to Start! \nBONUS: SEED SWAP – BRING YOUR SEEDS TO EXCHANGE WITH OTHERS \nAbout Seed Saving: The practical understanding and value of saving seeds. Which seeds can be saved – how and when to do it? Which seeds are easier to save? What is scarification and stratification? Pamela will discuss her successes and failures in saving seeds and asks that you share your seed saving history with the group too. Why is seed saving so important? Saving seeds allows you to select for particular characteristics you might like to cultivate by selecting fruits or plants to harvest with those same traits. You can choose seeds with the best tasting\, largest\, earliest ripening fruits to save that would ensure these same qualities in the next generation. And it can save you money! \nAbout Pamela Darney: \nBrief Bio \nPamela is a Master Gardener\, class of 2022\, and then completed the Master Naturalist course in August of 2023 and has been a constant friend to the Mathews Gardening Group.  She is also a rookie Oyster Gardener – growing both the diploid and triploid varieties in the York River.  She has been keeping bees since 2020 and is fascinated by the hive mentality\, the life cycle of the honeybee (different for the queen\, worker\, and drone)\, and their dedication to the caring of the Queen.  \nPamela recently retired from full time work and has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and an MBA with a concentration in Finance. She is focusing on herbs\, dahlias\, and native plants – all which support providing food for the bees. \nStay afterwards for continued Q&A with the speaker. \nParking Notice – Members with mobility challenges please park near the Extension office entry beyond the lots halfway point. For others\, there is ample parking at the nearby Chesapeake Bank on the right of the building and parking at the lot to the left of the building. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Public Opening of the Thomas Hunley General Store & Post Office
DESCRIPTION:General stores and post offices were both a mainstay and a way of life in Mathews County years ago. They were the gathering spots and the epicenters of each of the respective communities throughout the county. \nOn Saturday\, June 22\, 10:00 am until 2:00 pm\, Mathews “newest general store” will open its doors to the public.  The Tommy Hunley General Store/post office will receive its first official customers at Saturday’s open reception at the Mathews Museum\, 200 Main Street\, where the new general store is now an official permanent exhibit. \nRay Hunley\, longtime commissioner of  revenue in Mathews\, donated both a significant collection of his father’s general store/post office memorabilia as well as many hours of his personal time\, lovingly and patiently recreating  a “mini” general store within the walls of the Museum. Years ago\, Ray’s father\, Tommy Hunley\,  was an employee  of the Virginia Power Company\, and as part of his job\, he would travel throughout the county\,  visiting the various general stores\, and meeting with the owners. As time went by\, and the general stores closed\, he would acquire much of the products and artifacts from the stores and store them in his own one room building on Church Street. \n“All of the contents of this store were original\, no reproductions.  He had visitors from all over the world visit his store over the years\, including two Virginia Governors\,” said Ray Hunley.  “ He was highlighted on two evening news shows on Wavy TV and WTKR TV.  It was his wish that the contents be preserved and made available to the citizens of Mathews as a memory of past times.  Many of the contents are one-of-a-kind or one-of-a-few.” \nTommy Hunley passed away in 2005\, and his wish was to continue the memories and share the history.  Ray and his wife Doris felt that the collection could best be displayed at the Museum. The general store exhibit now officially resides  within the walls of  the Mathews Museum and will now be open to the public\, honoring Tommy Hunley’s wishes. \nThe Museum announces the store’s grand opening on Saturday\, June  22nd.  Museum President Tom Robinson says\, “Mathews Museum is pleased and honored to own this collection\, and we want the museum to be a real place to visit in Mathews.” \nVisit www.mathewsvamuseum.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series at Williams Wharf Landing
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mathews Land Conservancy for a discussion on the rise in modern aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay and why we should make room for it\, with Mike Congrove and Stan Allen from Oyster Seed Holdings. Oyster aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay bloomed relatively late on the world stage\, but rose very quickly in the 2000s so that Virginia now leads the East Coast in production. This growth was bolstered by the development of breeding techniques that maximize productivity. With this growth was a concomitant rise in hatchery production\, and Oyster Seed Holdings was one of the founding oyster hatcheries in the Bay. The restorative nature of oyster culture is a vital force in sustainable food supply writ large in the world.

SUMMARY:Summer Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Mathews Museum will host a discussion of the use of silver in the colonial period. The presentation will be in the Museum’s newly renovated and updated media room. It is open to the public and there is no charge for this event. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of the history of the use of Virginia silver in the 1700s and 1800s. The guest speaker will be the Museum’s Vice Chair\, Tom Karow\, who is a silver historian and is a member of the Mathews VA250 Committee. He will discuss the silversmiths of Virginia prior to 1865\, when silversmithing was considered a craft and appreciated as an art form. \nThe displaying of coin silver and sterling silver was once considered a sign of wealth and status. Examples of the art of fine dining during the 1700s\, with displays of silver\, can still be viewed at Mount Vernon and Monticello. Karow will have on display\, a wide selection of silver on loan from area dealers and owners\, showing examples of Virginia silver that represent pieces of historical significance\, some dating back into the mid 18th century\, handmade by some of Virginia’s most renowned silversmiths. Karow\, a well known local historian and Mathews resident\, is President of the Fairfield Foundation and a member of the Mathews VA250 Committee. \nCome join us as we step back in time at the Mathews Museum! Reservations are not required.

SUMMARY:Movie Night at the Museum: "State Fair"
DESCRIPTION:Movie Night at the Museum\, Friday\, March 8\, will open with a brief historical slide presentation  of the nearly 40 years of County Fairs that were held in Mathews beginning in 1901\, and lasting  up to the early 1940s.  That  presentation will be followed by the movie\, “State Fair\,” an American musical film which tells the story of a brother and sister who go to a state fair in Dallas and find good clean fun and romance.  \nThe film sets the stage for this year’s Mathews heritage festival on May 4\, “A Rural Life\,” which focuses on family\, fishing and farming.  “It will definitely be reminiscent of a county fair this year\, “ says MHM President Tom Robinson.  “We are expanding our May Faire experience\, with significantly more children’s entertainment\, including painting horses\, hatching baby chicks\, the traditional May Pole dance\, a children’s “May Faire Zoo” and a very special guest\, Jonathan Austin and his “24 Hour Emergency Juggling and Magic Services!” \nThe musical\, “State Fair\,” is intended as an introduction to the upcoming May 4 May Faire event\, which will be similar in many ways to an old fashioned county fair. Doors open at the Museum\, 200 Main Street\, at  5:30 and the program begins at 6:00. No reservations are required and there is no charge for this event. Join the Mathews Historical Museum in their newly renovated Media Room!
