SUMMARY:MLC's Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Peabody\, New Executive Director of Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission\, Shares Overview of VA’s Working Waterfront Grant and 2026 Goals!  \nRachael Peabody previously served as the Assistant Director of Restoration for the Elizabeth River Project in Norfolk and spent six years (2014 –2020) at VMRC working for both its Fisheries and Habitat Management Divisions. “Virginia’s coastal ecosystems support fisheries\, wildlife\, aquaculture\, navigation\, carbon storage and tourism\, and provide significant naturaldefenses against coastal storms. Sea level rise and climate change is a key threat to the health of our marine environments\, fisheries\, and economy now and in the future.”  \nRachael’s love for the marine environment and passion for conservation of its natural resources began at the University of West Alabama where she worked as a graduate student at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Her Master’s research focused on the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on intertidal fish communities in an Alabama salt marsh. Her work along the east coast on commercial fishing vessels and building relationships within the fishing and marine industries has engrained in Rachael the importance of balanced and sustainable management of our marine resources to sustain healthy coastal communities.

SUMMARY:Changing Courses
DESCRIPTION:Changing Courses Presented by Paul Mitchell\, Historian \nHow two Confederate soldiers faithfully served God and changed the course of history after the Civil War \nPaul Mitchell is a native of Powatan\, Virginia\, and a graduate of VMI. In recent years\, he has spent his time researching and writing. He is coming to speak at Kingston Parish House about two figures important to the history of Kingston Parish. \nThe Rev. Frank Stringfellow served as rector of Kingston from 1886 to 1889. The Rev. Giles Buckner Cook served Kingston as rector from 1904 to 1915. Both men served the Confederate Army in fascinating ways earlier in their lives and then went on to faithfully serve God in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia in ways that included the furthering of black education at many levels.

SUMMARY:Bay Quilters Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:MATHEWS MUSEUM TO REOPEN\, \nFEATURING BAY QUILTERS EXHIBITION  \nThe Mathews Museum reopens September 5\, 2025 after 2 months of renovation.  The  Museum’s first major exhibit will feature\, “The Art of the Quilt\,” sponsored by the Mathews Bay Quilters Guild. \nThe exhibit showcases the talent of fabric artists and ranges from full-sized quilts to small items such as table runners and wall hangings.  Styles range from traditional Americana which reflect techniques reminiscent of the 19th and 20th centuries to Modern quilts\, a style that came into prominence in the early 21st century.  There is also a special exhibit of quilts that were displayed at the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show\, a national quilt exhibition held annually in Hampton\, VA. \n“The Art of the Quilt” exhibit is chaired by Cheryl Dale and Raquel Kelly\, Mathews residents and members of the Mathews Bay Quilters Guild.  The combined talents of these ladies represent decades of experience and knowledge of textile study.  “Every quilt has a story\,” says Dale\, a noted fabric and quilt historian and international textile teacher.  “We plan to share those stories as expressed in fabric art.  This will be an opportunity for visitors to not only see items that bring back memories\, but to experience the development of modern quilts that are more mindful of cubism and surrealism.” \nThe exhibit will remain at the Museum throughout the month of September. Joining in the opening weekend activities is the Bay School Community Arts Center\, presenting its “Mathews Arts Fest” during Mathews Market Days. The Fest offers for sale numerous creations by local artisans.   \nVETERAN’S QUILT RAFFLE \nA member of the Mathews Bay Quilters Guild has donated a patriotic quilt to be raffled off during Mathews Market Days. This raffle is open only to veterans and surviving dependents of deceased veterans.  Raffle tickets are free but limited to one person each\, and the winner will be announced during the Museum’s May Faire activities\, May 5 & 6. (Quilt photo below) \nScissors sharpening on site!! Call for information. \nHubble Professional Sharpening\, Smithfield\, Va.

SUMMARY:Author Talk @ the Library
DESCRIPTION:Historian Jon Kukla\, will deliver a lecture entitled “Patrick Henry: Champion of Liberty.” \nPatrick Henry is remembered today mostly for one line from his speech: “Give me liberty or give me death.” This is a shame because he was one of the leading patriots of the Revolutionary era\, Virginia’s first governor after independence\, a powerful voice in the early republic\, and a great orator and statesman who played such a crucial role in shaping the course of Revolutionary Virginia’s history. In Patrick Henry: Champion of Liberty\, Jon Kukla\, who has been studying Henry for years and has even lived on one of his former plantations\, restores Patrick Henry to the front rank of American Revolutionary patriots. \nJon Kukla has served as director of historical research and publishing at the Library of Virginia\, curator and then director of the Historic New Orleans Collection\, and as director of Red Hill\, The Patrick Henry National Memorial in Charlotte County. He is the author of A Wilderness So Immense: The Louisiana Purchase and the Destiny of America\, Mr. Jefferson’s Women\, and Patrick Henry: Champion of Liberty.

SUMMARY:Mathews Museum to Host Presentation on Historic Williams Wharf
DESCRIPTION:As part of May Faire\, join the Mathews Museum to hear Pam Muffelman speak about the history of Williams Wharf Landing from the 1600s to present day! This event is free and open to the public\, and refreshments will be provided. \nLocal historian and longtime Mathews resident Pam Muffelman will lead the presentation\, guiding attendees through a rich timeline of Williams Wharf and its surrounding area—from its earliest days in the 1600s to the present. Muffelman\, known for her engaging talks and extensive research\, has long been involved in efforts to preserve and reimagine the site as a public waterfront park that honors its unique past. \n“The Wharf was very active from its inception\,” Muffelman explains\, “with its founding by the Williams family prior to the Revolutionary War. It was a well-established port of call—particularly for British ships—and played a significant role during the war as both a lookout and a center for continued trade and shipbuilding activities.” \nDrawing from the research of respected Virginia historian Martha McCartney\, Muffelman will highlight the ongoing maritime economy of the East River during the Revolutionary War\, including local shipbuilders who continued crafting vessels\, sails\, rigging\, and equipment to support the war effort. The talk will also touch on the once-thriving tide mill at Poplar Grove—believed to have ground cornmeal for Washington’s troops in nearby Yorktown. As the last tide mill of its kind in Virginia and one of the few remaining in the nation\, Muffelman notes its historical significance and urges greater recognition of this rare local landmark. \n“With the upcoming 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding\, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what life may have been like at the Wharf during the colonial era\,” Muffelman says. “The ships\, the families\, the bills of lading—they all help tell the story of how deeply Mathews was connected to the early maritime history of this country.”
