SUMMARY:Tompkins Cottage Museum Open
DESCRIPTION:Open April 1st – October 28th! \nThe cottage\, which is headquarters for the Mathews County Historical Society\, is named for Christopher Tompkins\, a local sea captain\, planter\, local merchant\, and member of the state legislature. He bought the cottage property in 1837 and is the first known owner. \nExhibits include a room dedicated to the history of Mathews County which serves as a gift shop\, two rooms representing a home from the 1840s to the 1900s\, and a room dedicated to Sally Louisa Tompkins who was the first woman commissioned in an American military unit. \nThe Tompkins Cottage is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.

DESCRIPTION:This Let’s Farm Day will focus on: beekeeping basics\, seed starting 101\, organic growing basics – how to get your gardens started\, planning & growing your own herbal medicine gardens. We will have new Chicks on the Farm and will talk a bit about caring for new Chicks. We will start with a quick tour of our Farm before we start the Sharing & Learning! There will be a Discovery Weed Walk too! \nThere will be light refreshments out\, but it’s always a good idea to bring your water! \n$25 per Family\, FREE to GROW CLUB MEMBERS. \nGet your tickets on the link below or the Farm Events page on the website. \n  \n*Our next Let’s Farm Day\, Aug. 12th will focus on Chicken Care -how to hatch your own chicks and chicks will be hatching out for you to view\, We will also discuss Rabbits\, Ducks & Dogs*\, there will be a demo on how to humanely slaughter poultry too and how to prepare the meat for the freezer.

DESCRIPTION:On the second Friday of each month\, the Mathews Historical Museum hosts a movie that is of historical or general interest to the public. \n\nApril’s movie\, BLUE GOLD:World Water Wars\, is a 2008 documentary film directed\, co-produced and co-written by Sam Bozzo\, based upon the book\, Blue Gold: the Fight to Stop the Corporate Theft of the World’s Water\, by Maude Barlow and Tony Clark.  The book examines the environmental and political implications of our planet’s diminishing water supply\, suggesting that future wars will be fought over the issue of water availability. \n\nThere is no charge for this event.  Doors open at 6:30 and the show begins at 7:00.
