DESCRIPTION:In preparation for Mathews County’s grand July 4th celebration\, the Mathews VA250 Committee invites residents\, neighbors\, and visitors to a special concert on Friday\, May 15\, at Mathews High School. \nCo-sponsored by the Mathews Museum\, Mathews Historical Society\, Sons of the American Revolution\, and Daughters of the American Revolution\, this event commemorates the 250th anniversary of Virginia’s declaration of independence—the first colony to do so. \nThe Courthouse Community Orchestra\, directed by Staff Sergeant Jarrett Kocan of the U.S. Air Force\, will perform an engaging program of music starting at 7:00 p.m. (Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.) \nAdmission is free. Join in for an afternoon of music and history as we celebrate Virginia’s role in America’s fight for independence!

The 2026 Plein Air Artists will be painting at various locations in Mathews County. Watch the artists at work during the day and then join us at the Bay School at 5:30pm for a reception. Paintings done that day will be available for purchase during the reception. See if you can determine Best in Show and which artist receives the prize money! This event is free and open to the public.
