Hudgins House is a large, rambling 19th-century farmhouse that was a boarding house during the days of steamboat travel on the Chesapeake Bay. It has been updated with central heat and air conditioning, and modern appliances, but with a thought to its history and "country style." The house sits on 10 acres, at the end of a private lane one mile from the public road. There is extensive shoreline on Hills Bay, at the front of the house, with views to the Piankatank River and Chesapeake Bay. The water is shallow near the shore, safe for wading children, and there is a narrow sandy beach to explore. The house is quite large, with two interior staircases. On the first floor are a sun porch with coffee bar, large living room and kitchen, dining room, bathroom, library, and 40-foot-long enclosed porch with two daybeds at one end and a TV/sitting area at the other. The second floor has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry room, and a tiny room with a daybed suitable for a child up to age 5 or 6. One of the outbuildings has a "summer kitchen," with refrigerator, cook top and oven to supplement the kitchen facilities in the house. The property is ideal for family get-togethers and reunions of old friends. Easy
day trips can be made to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown,
Jamestown, and other historic sites. Charter fishing trips
and boat/kayak rentals are available. Marinas and public
boat ramps are nearby. Many fine golf courses are within a
one-hour drive. Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. are
about an hour's drive away. Primarily, though, this rural Chesapeake Bay community is a place to relax and get away from the workaday world. Birders, artists, and people who just need a breather will be happy here. |
